Pairs or small groups need proportionally more, and the enclosure should be large enough that the animals can establish preferred resting spots, grazing routes, and basking positions without crowding.

Space is not merely a comfort issue; it is a health issue. Tortoises that are confined to undersized quarters develop obesity more rapidly because they cannot move enough to offset caloric intake, and they are more prone to shell abrasions, respiratory illness from stagnant air, and stress-related behaviors such as pacing or ramming enclosure walls. The metabolic and skeletal consequences of chronic under-housing accumulate over years and are difficult to reverse once established.

For hatchlings and juveniles, a smaller, controlled environment is appropriate for the first few years of life, but keepers should plan for the adult footprint from the beginning. Outdoor basking areas should receive direct, unobstructed sunlight for a significant portion of the day. In climates where cloud cover or seasonal angle reduces solar intensity, supplemental basking spots can be created using elevated platforms of dark stone or concrete pavers that absorb and radiate heat. These thermal mass elements extend the usable basking window and give the tortoise a warm surface to rest on even after the sun moves past the enclosure's open areas.

In the wild, these tortoises wade into shallow pools and puddles to hydrate, cool down, and facilitate waste elimination, and captive animals benefit enormously from the same opportunity. A shallow soaking pool or pond, deep enough for the tortoise to submerge its lower shell and chin but not so deep that a smaller animal risks drowning, should be a permanent feature of the outdoor enclosure.

Construction of the soaking area depends on the number and size of the animals. For a single adult, a preformed livestock water trough or a pond liner set into an excavated depression works well. Security and Fencing

Aldabra tortoises are deceptively strong and persistent, and any enclosure fencing must be engineered to contain an animal that can exert several hundred pounds of force against a barrier. Lightweight garden fencing, chicken wire, and wooden picket fences are entirely inadequate. Effective perimeter barriers include concrete block walls, heavy-gauge welded wire panels attached to metal or treated-wood posts set in concrete footings, or masonry walls built on a proper foundation. The barrier should stand at least three feet high for adults and must be checked regularly for undermining.

Burrowing and pushing are the two primary escape strategies. While Aldabra tortoises are not prolific diggers compared to some species, they will scrape at the base of a fence line, particularly at corners, and can gradually undermine a barrier over weeks. Burying the lower edge of the fence twelve to eighteen inches below grade, or pouring a concrete footer along the perimeter, prevents tunneling. Above ground, the fence must resist sustained leaning pressure, which means the structural posts need to be spaced closely enough and anchored deeply enough to withstand a four-hundred-pound animal pushing steadily against the mesh.

Gates are the weakest point in most enclosures. A gate that swings open under the tortoise's weight or that leaves a gap at the bottom wide enough for a juvenile to squeeze through is an escape waiting to happen. Heavy-duty, self-closing gate hardware with a positive latch, combined with a ground-level threshold that eliminates gaps, addresses both failure modes. If multiple keepers access the enclosure, a spring-loaded closer ensures the gate does not get left ajar during routine feeding or cleaning.

Predator protection is relevant for hatchlings and juveniles, even though adult Aldabra tortoises have few natural predators. Raccoons, dogs, raptors, and rats can injure or kill small tortoises, and enclosures housing young animals should include a secure top cover of welded wire or hardware cloth. As the animal grows into its second decade and approaches a size that deters most predators, the overhead cover becomes less critical, but the perimeter fencing remains a permanent fixture.
