They should never constitute the bulk of the diet for an Aldabra tortoise, but a measured portion mixed into a salad of greens and hay can fill nutritional gaps, particularly for keepers in climates where winter limits access to fresh plant material.

Supplements

Calcium supplementation is non-negotiable for captive Aldabra tortoises. Even a well-constructed diet of greens and grasses rarely delivers the calcium density that a wild tortoise obtains from mineral-rich volcanic soils and the sheer volume of native vegetation it consumes across a day of free-range grazing. A plain calcium carbonate powder, free of phosphorus and added vitamins, should be lightly dusted over food at most feedings for growing juveniles and at every other feeding for established adults.

A calcium product that includes vitamin D3 is used on a rotating basis alongside the plain powder. D3 is essential for calcium metabolism, and while outdoor-housed tortoises synthesize it through natural sunlight exposure, animals kept indoors or in climates with limited UV intensity may not produce enough on their own. The D3-inclusive supplement fills this gap, but because D3 is fat-soluble and can accumulate to toxic levels, it is used less frequently than plain calcium, typically once or twice a week depending on the animal's UV exposure.

This covers trace minerals and vitamins that may be underrepresented in cultivated produce compared to wild forage. Vitamin A, in particular, is important for respiratory and ocular health, though it too carries toxicity risk at high doses, so the multivitamin should be used as directed rather than applied liberally.

Cuttlebone or calcium blocks placed in the enclosure give the tortoise an opportunity to self-regulate its calcium intake through voluntary gnawing. Many Aldabra tortoises will rasp at a cuttlebone periodically, and the behavior also provides minor beak maintenance. Foods to Avoid

High-protein greens such as spinach, beet greens, and Swiss chard should be avoided or used only sparingly. Spinach and beet greens are particularly problematic because they contain high concentrations of oxalic acid, which binds dietary calcium and prevents its absorption, effectively working against your supplementation efforts. Swiss chard carries a similar though somewhat lower oxalate load. While none of these plants are acutely toxic, their routine inclusion undermines the calcium balance that is critical for shell and skeletal integrity.

The temptation to offer fruit frequently is understandable because tortoises visibly enjoy it, but palatability is not a guide to nutritional suitability. Keeping fruit to a rare treat protects long-term digestive health.

All forms of animal protein, including dog food, cat food, eggs, and insects, are inappropriate for Aldabra tortoises. Despite occasional anecdotal accounts of wild tortoises scavenging carrion, captive diets that include animal protein are strongly linked to renal disease, gout, and accelerated, deforming shell growth. The species' digestive physiology is optimized for plant fermentation, and protein levels beyond what grasses and greens naturally provide place unnecessary strain on the kidneys.

Processed human foods, bread, pasta, rice, and dairy products have no place in the diet. These items are nutritionally alien to the species and introduce refined carbohydrates and fats that the tortoise's metabolism is not equipped to handle. Similarly, ornamental plants such as azaleas, rhododendrons, oleander, and daffodils are toxic to tortoises and must be excluded from any area where the animal grazes. Most keepers feed adults a large, varied salad of greens, grasses, and hay once daily, supplemented with hay available for ad libitum grazing throughout the day. The fresh salad provides the nutritional core, while the hay satisfies the animal's drive to forage and keeps the gut's fermentation cycle active.

Seasonal adjustments are appropriate and reflect the animal's natural rhythms. In cooler months or during periods of reduced activity, appetite often decreases, and reducing portion sizes accordingly prevents waste and uneaten food from fouling the enclosure. Conversely, females in breeding condition and animals emerging from a period of lower activity may eat noticeably more, and the diet should accommodate that demand without shifting the composition toward softer, richer foods.

Monitoring body condition over time is the most reliable way to calibrate feeding. A healthy Aldabra tortoise carries moderate flesh along its limbs without excessive fat rolls at the leg openings of the shell, and its shell grows smoothly without raised, pyramided scutes.
