The Aldabra tortoise is a committed herbivore whose wild diet on the Aldabra Atoll consists almost entirely of grasses, sedges, woody plant stems, and fallen leaves. Replicating that dietary profile in captivity is both the central challenge and the single most important factor in long-term health. Unlike omnivorous reptiles, this species has no requirement for animal protein, and offering it can lead to organ stress, pyramiding of the shell, and dangerously rapid growth that the skeleton cannot support.
Fiber is the cornerstone of proper nutrition. The Aldabra tortoise's digestive tract is built for slow fermentation of coarse plant material, relying on hindgut microbial communities to extract nutrients from cellulose-heavy foods. A diet that substitutes soft, sugar-rich produce for fibrous grasses disrupts this fermentation process, leading to loose stools, bloating, and a gradual decline in gut health that compounds over years.
Calcium availability is the second pillar. Shell and bone growth in a species that can exceed five hundred pounds demands a sustained, reliable calcium supply, and the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of the overall diet should sit at or above two to one. Many common greens and vegetables invert this ratio or contain oxalates that bind calcium, so food selection must be deliberate rather than based on whatever is convenient or inexpensive at a grocery store.
Because the Aldabra tortoise can live well beyond a century, the consequences of nutritional errors are cumulative and often invisible until the damage is entrenched. Shell deformities from low calcium, fatty liver from excessive fruit, and renal complications from chronic overfeeding of high-protein greens may not manifest for years. Building the diet correctly from the start and maintaining it with discipline is an investment that pays across the animal's entire life.
