African Clawed Frogs (Xenopus laevis) are voracious, opportunistic predators in the wild, consuming anything they can fit into their wide, toothless mouths. In captivity this translates to a broad diet, but one that still demands attention to balance. Unlike terrestrial amphibians that may take dusted insects from tongs, clawed frogs feed entirely underwater, which changes how nutrients are delivered and how quickly supplements dissolve away from the food item. Understanding these mechanics is the first step toward building a sound feeding program.
Protein is the cornerstone of the diet. Clawed frogs are carnivorous and require animal-based protein at every meal. Their digestive tract is short and efficient, optimized for breaking down whole prey rather than plant matter. A diet that leans too heavily on any single protein source — even a high-quality one — risks gaps in amino acids and trace minerals, which is why dietary variety matters as much as protein quantity.
Calcium and phosphorus balance is critical for skeletal health, particularly in growing juveniles and egg-producing females. Most whole prey items carry a reasonable mineral profile on their own, but commercial pellets vary widely, and some budget formulations skimp on bioavailable calcium. Vitamin A and the B-complex vitamins also deserve attention, as deficiencies in either can manifest as skin abnormalities, lethargy, and compromised immune function over time.
Because these frogs live fully submerged, obesity is a genuine risk. They are less active than many terrestrial species, and food is delivered directly into their environment rather than requiring any pursuit. Keepers who feed generously and on a daily schedule often end up with bloated, sluggish animals whose organs are under strain from visceral fat deposits. Feeding the right foods in controlled amounts is the single most impactful husbandry decision you will make for this species.
