The Cobalt Blue Tarantula is a fossorial species, meaning it lives primarily underground in deep burrows. This fundamental behavior dictates every aspect of enclosure design. Unlike arboreal tarantulas that need vertical climbing space, the Cobalt Blue requires horizontal floor space and, most critically, significant substrate depth. An enclosure for an adult Cobalt Blue should prioritize depth over height, with a minimum footprint of roughly twelve by eight inches and enough vertical room to accommodate six to eight inches of packed substrate plus a few inches of headroom above.
Glass and acrylic terrariums are the two most popular enclosure materials for this species. Glass offers excellent visibility and weight stability, making it harder for the enclosure to be knocked over. Acrylic is lighter and retains heat slightly better, but it scratches more easily and can become cloudy over time. Both materials work well as long as the enclosure provides adequate ventilation and a secure lid. The Cobalt Blue is exceptionally fast and can escape through surprisingly small openings, so a tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable.
For spiderlings and small juveniles, a modified deli cup or small acrylic container with ventilation holes works perfectly. These smaller enclosures make it easier to monitor the young spider and maintain consistent humidity levels. As the tarantula grows, it should be moved into progressively larger enclosures that allow for deeper substrate and more burrowing space. Avoid placing a tiny spiderling in a full-sized adult enclosure, as the excess space makes it harder for the spider to find food and creates unnecessary stress.
Front-opening enclosures are strongly preferred over top-opening designs for this species. Because the Cobalt Blue burrows into deep substrate, opening the enclosure from the top often means disturbing or collapsing the burrow system, which stresses the spider and can provoke a defensive response. A front-opening door allows you to access the enclosure for maintenance, water changes, and feeding without disrupting the substrate layers above the burrow.
