Space & Enclosure Requirements

The Cobalt Blue Tarantula is a fossorial species, meaning it lives primarily underground in deep burrows. This fundamental behavior dictates every aspect of enclosure design. Unlike arboreal tarantulas that need vertical climbing space, the Cobalt Blue requires horizontal floor space and, most critically, significant substrate depth. An enclosure for an adult Cobalt Blue should prioritize depth over height, with a minimum footprint of roughly twelve by eight inches and enough vertical room to accommodate six to eight inches of packed substrate plus a few inches of headroom above.

Glass and acrylic terrariums are the two most popular enclosure materials for this species. Glass offers excellent visibility and weight stability, making it harder for the enclosure to be knocked over. Acrylic is lighter and retains heat slightly better, but it scratches more easily and can become cloudy over time. Both materials work well as long as the enclosure provides adequate ventilation and a secure lid. The Cobalt Blue is exceptionally fast and can escape through surprisingly small openings, so a tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable.

For spiderlings and small juveniles, a modified deli cup or small acrylic container with ventilation holes works perfectly. These smaller enclosures make it easier to monitor the young spider and maintain consistent humidity levels. As the tarantula grows, it should be moved into progressively larger enclosures that allow for deeper substrate and more burrowing space. Avoid placing a tiny spiderling in a full-sized adult enclosure, as the excess space makes it harder for the spider to find food and creates unnecessary stress.

Front-opening enclosures are strongly preferred over top-opening designs for this species. Because the Cobalt Blue burrows into deep substrate, opening the enclosure from the top often means disturbing or collapsing the burrow system, which stresses the spider and can provoke a defensive response. A front-opening door allows you to access the enclosure for maintenance, water changes, and feeding without disrupting the substrate layers above the burrow.

Substrate & Burrowing Setup

Substrate selection is arguably the single most important housing decision for a Cobalt Blue Tarantula. This species is a committed burrower that will excavate extensive tunnel systems if given the opportunity, and the substrate must support this behavior. A blend of coconut fiber and organic topsoil in roughly equal proportions creates an ideal burrowing medium that holds its shape when the spider digs but does not compact so densely that tunneling becomes impossible.

Substrate depth should be generous. For an adult Cobalt Blue, six to eight inches of substrate is the minimum recommendation, and many experienced keepers provide even more. The substrate should be packed firmly enough to hold tunnel walls — loosely poured substrate will collapse on the spider as it digs, which can be dangerous and discouraging. Many keepers pre-pack the substrate by pressing it down in layers as they fill the enclosure, then use a pencil or dowel to create a starter burrow at an angle into the substrate to encourage the spider to begin tunneling.

Moisture gradient is a critical concept for substrate management with this species. The lower layers of substrate should be kept moderately damp to replicate the natural humidity found deep underground in the spider's native Southeast Asian habitat. The upper layers can be allowed to dry somewhat, creating a gradient that lets the spider self-regulate its humidity exposure by moving deeper or shallower within its burrow. Avoid making the entire substrate uniformly wet, as this promotes mold and bacterial growth on the surface.

Avoid substrates that contain fertilizers, pesticides, or added chemicals. Pure coconut fiber purchased from reptile supply sources is safe, as is additive-free organic topsoil. Cedar and pine shavings should never be used, as the aromatic oils in these woods are toxic to invertebrates. Vermiculite can be mixed in small quantities to improve moisture retention in the lower layers, but it should not be the primary substrate, as it does not hold burrow structure well on its own.

Ventilation & Lid Security

Adequate ventilation is essential for preventing stagnant air and mold growth inside the enclosure, but it must be balanced against the high humidity requirements of the Cobalt Blue Tarantula. Cross-ventilation — achieved by placing ventilation openings on two opposite sides of the enclosure rather than only on the lid — promotes air circulation while minimizing the rate at which moisture escapes. Many purpose-built tarantula enclosures feature mesh strips along the lower and upper portions of the sides specifically for this purpose.

If you are modifying a standard terrarium or container to house a Cobalt Blue, drill or melt small ventilation holes in a pattern that allows airflow without creating openings large enough for the spider or its prey to escape through. For spiderling enclosures, holes should be no larger than the width of a pin. For adult enclosures, holes or mesh strips can be slightly larger, but always err on the side of smaller openings. The Cobalt Blue is an extremely fast spider, and an escape from the enclosure is both stressful for the spider and potentially dangerous for the keeper, given this species' defensive temperament.

Lid security deserves special emphasis. The Cobalt Blue can push against a loosely fitted lid with surprising force, particularly when startled or during nighttime activity. Enclosures should have lids that latch, clip, or lock securely. Weighted lids — such as a piece of glass placed on top of a screen mesh lid — are sometimes used but can shift if the enclosure is bumped. A proper latching mechanism is always more reliable than relying on gravity alone.

Inspect ventilation openings periodically for blockages. Substrate particles, webbing, and debris can accumulate over mesh strips and reduce airflow over time. A gentle cleaning with a soft brush during routine maintenance keeps air moving freely through the enclosure without requiring a full teardown.

Humidity & Temperature Management

The Cobalt Blue Tarantula originates from the tropical forests of Myanmar and Thailand, where it inhabits underground burrows in warm, humid soil. Replicating these conditions in captivity is essential for the spider's health, particularly during molting. Target ambient humidity levels of 70 to 80 percent inside the enclosure, with the deeper substrate layers remaining slightly more moist than the surface. A hygrometer placed inside the enclosure provides an objective measurement, though experienced keepers often gauge humidity by the feel and appearance of the substrate.

Maintaining humidity in a well-ventilated enclosure requires regular attention. Lightly misting one side of the enclosure or pouring a small amount of water directly onto the substrate near the edge — away from the burrow entrance — replenishes moisture without flooding the spider's living space. Overflow the water dish slightly during refills to dampen the surrounding substrate. Avoid spraying water directly into the burrow or onto the spider, as this can cause stress and a defensive response.

Temperature should be maintained between 75 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Room temperature in most homes falls within or close to this range, making supplemental heating unnecessary for many keepers. If your home runs cooler, a low-wattage heat mat placed on one side of the enclosure — never underneath it — can provide a gentle thermal gradient. Placing the heat mat under a fossorial enclosure risks overheating the deep substrate layers where the spider spends most of its time, which can be lethal. Side-mounted heat mats allow the spider to move toward or away from the warmth as needed.

Avoid placing the enclosure in direct sunlight, near heating vents, or in areas with significant temperature fluctuations. The Cobalt Blue is nocturnal and does not benefit from UV lighting. Ambient room lighting or a natural light cycle from nearby windows is sufficient. Sudden temperature swings are far more dangerous to tarantulas than a slightly sub-optimal constant temperature, so stability should be the primary goal.

Hides & Enclosure Furnishings

Because the Cobalt Blue Tarantula constructs its own underground retreat through burrowing, elaborate hides and decorations are far less important for this species than for terrestrial or arboreal tarantulas. The burrow itself serves as the spider's primary hide, and most of the enclosure surface will be relatively bare aside from the burrow entrance, which the spider typically lines with silk webbing.

That said, providing a piece of cork bark, a curved piece of coconut shell, or a similar natural item near the substrate surface can serve as a secondary retreat and may encourage the spider to anchor its burrow entrance beneath the structure. Some keepers half-bury cork bark at an angle to create a ready-made tunnel that the spider can adopt and extend. This approach can be especially helpful for newly rehoused spiders that have not yet begun burrowing in their new enclosure.

Keep surface furnishings minimal. Tall decorations, climbing branches, and excessive clutter are unnecessary for this ground-dwelling species and can actually be counterproductive. A Cobalt Blue that climbs a tall decoration and falls risks abdominal rupture, particularly if it is well-fed. Any items placed in the enclosure should be stable, low-profile, and free of sharp edges that could injure the spider.

Live or artificial plants are optional and primarily cosmetic. If you use live plants, choose hardy species that tolerate low light and high humidity, such as pothos or small ferns. Artificial plants work equally well for aesthetics and are easier to maintain. Whether live or artificial, keep plants positioned away from the burrow entrance so they do not obstruct the spider's access to its primary living space.

Maintenance & Cleaning

Routine enclosure maintenance for a Cobalt Blue Tarantula should be performed carefully and with minimal disturbance to the spider and its burrow system. The most frequent task is refreshing the water dish, which should be cleaned and refilled every two to three days or whenever debris accumulates. Use a pair of long tongs or forceps to remove and replace the water dish without reaching your hand into the enclosure, as the Cobalt Blue can move with startling speed when it perceives a threat near its burrow.

Spot-cleaning involves removing uneaten prey items, boluses — the small, bundled remnants of digested prey that tarantulas discard — and any visible mold from the substrate surface. These tasks can typically be accomplished with long-handled tongs without disrupting the deeper substrate layers. If mold appears repeatedly on the surface, it may indicate that the substrate is too wet or that ventilation is insufficient. Reducing misting frequency and improving airflow usually resolves surface mold issues.

Full substrate changes should be performed infrequently, ideally no more than once or twice a year unless there is a compelling reason such as a mite infestation or severe mold problem. Tearing down the enclosure destroys the burrow system the spider has constructed, which is a significant source of stress. When a full change is necessary, prepare the new enclosure completely before moving the spider so that the transition is as quick as possible. Use a catch cup to transfer the tarantula — never handle a Cobalt Blue with bare hands, as this species is notoriously defensive and possesses a medically significant bite.

During maintenance, take the opportunity to inspect the enclosure hardware. Check that the lid latch functions properly, ventilation openings are clear, and any heat mats or monitoring devices are working correctly. A few minutes of preventive inspection during routine maintenance can catch small problems before they become serious issues that compromise the spider's safety or health.
