Space Requirements

Giant Prickly Stick Insects are among the larger commonly kept phasmid species, with adult females reaching up to twenty centimeters in body length. The critical dimension for any stick insect enclosure is height, not floor area. These insects are arboreal and need vertical space to hang freely during molting — a process that relies entirely on gravity to pull the insect out of its old exoskeleton.

The general rule for phasmid enclosures is that the height should be at least three times the body length of the largest individual. For Giant Pricklies, this translates to a minimum interior height of sixty centimeters. Width and depth are less critical but should allow room for foliage placement and adequate airflow. A footprint of roughly thirty by thirty centimeters is workable for a small group, though larger is always better.

Overcrowding is a common mistake with colony species. While Giant Pricklies are not territorial and tolerate close proximity, a packed enclosure makes it difficult for individuals to find safe molting positions. Failed molts due to physical interference from cage mates are one of the leading causes of mortality in captive phasmid colonies. Plan for the adult size and number of your colony, not just its current population.

Nymphs can be housed in smaller containers during their first few instars, but they grow quickly and should be moved to appropriately sized enclosures well before they approach subadult size. A staged housing approach — small rearing containers for hatchlings, then transfer to the main enclosure — works well for managing large hatches.

Enclosure Types

Mesh and screen enclosures are the most popular choice for Giant Prickly Stick Insects because they provide excellent ventilation and give the insects ample climbing surface on the walls and ceiling. Purpose-built insect mesh cages with zippered or magnetic-closure doors are widely available from invertebrate supply vendors and come in a range of sizes suited to phasmid keeping.

Glass and acrylic terrariums can also work but require careful attention to ventilation. Fully sealed glass enclosures trap moisture and stagnant air, creating conditions that promote mold growth and bacterial infection. If using a glass tank, the lid must be fully mesh or screen, and additional ventilation holes near the base may be necessary to encourage airflow from bottom to top.

Some keepers build custom enclosures from wooden frames with mesh panels, which allows for precise sizing and easy modification. This approach is especially practical for large breeding colonies that need more space than commercially available cages offer. Ensure that any wood used is untreated and free of varnish or chemical sealants that could off-gas harmful compounds.

Avoid enclosures with smooth interior walls and no mesh surfaces. Giant Pricklies need textured surfaces to climb and hang from, and a smooth-walled tank without climbing aids forces the insects to spend excessive time on the floor, which is stressful and increases the risk of molt failure.

Substrate & Floor Setup

The substrate in a stick insect enclosure serves primarily for hygiene and egg management rather than as a habitat feature. Giant Pricklies spend almost all of their time off the ground, clinging to foliage or enclosure walls. The floor layer needs to absorb moisture from misting, facilitate easy cleanup of frass, and — if you intend to breed — provide a suitable medium for egg collection.

Coconut coir or peat-free soil works well as a general-purpose substrate. A layer of two to three centimeters is sufficient. These materials hold moisture without becoming waterlogged, help maintain ambient humidity, and make it easy to sift through for eggs during routine maintenance. Avoid cedar or pine shavings, which release aromatic oils that are toxic to invertebrates.

Paper towel or newspaper is the simplest substrate option and makes cleaning exceptionally easy. It lacks the humidity-retaining properties of soil-based substrates but is ideal for keepers who mist frequently and prefer minimal maintenance. For egg collection, paper substrates make dropped eggs immediately visible.

Some keepers use a dual-layer system: a thin base of paper towel topped with a light scattering of coconut coir. This provides the easy visibility of paper with some of the moisture-retention benefits of organic substrate. Whichever substrate you choose, replace it fully at least once a month and spot-clean frass accumulation weekly to prevent mold and bacterial buildup.

Ventilation & Humidity Control

Balancing ventilation with humidity is the central challenge of stick insect housing. Giant Pricklies require moderate to high humidity — roughly sixty to seventy-five percent — to molt successfully, but stagnant, overly humid air promotes mold growth on frass, substrate, and uneaten foliage. Good enclosure design achieves both conditions simultaneously.

Mesh enclosures inherently provide strong ventilation, which means humidity can drop quickly in dry indoor environments. Misting once or twice daily with a fine spray bottle or pump sprayer is usually sufficient to maintain appropriate levels. Mist the foliage and enclosure walls rather than soaking the substrate, as surface droplets also serve as drinking water for the insects.

In very dry climates or during winter heating season, keepers may need to partially cover mesh panels with plastic sheeting or cling film to reduce airflow and retain moisture. Cover no more than two-thirds of the mesh surface to avoid creating dead air zones. A small hygrometer placed inside the enclosure provides reliable readings and removes guesswork from humidity management.

Glass enclosures with mesh lids tend to hold humidity well but can develop condensation problems if over-misted. If water is pooling on the glass walls or substrate is consistently saturated, reduce misting frequency and ensure the mesh lid is unobstructed. Persistent excess moisture leads to bacterial blooms and fungal growth that can sicken or kill the insects.

Temperature & Lighting

Giant Prickly Stick Insects thrive at typical room temperatures between twenty and twenty-six degrees Celsius. They are tolerant of minor fluctuations and do not require supplemental heating in most homes. If your room consistently drops below eighteen degrees, a small ceramic heat emitter or heat mat placed outside the enclosure can provide gentle warmth without drying the air excessively.

Avoid placing enclosures in direct sunlight. While a natural light cycle is beneficial for regulating the insects' day-night rhythm, direct sun can rapidly overheat a mesh or glass enclosure, pushing temperatures to lethal levels within minutes. Position the enclosure where it receives ambient room light or indirect natural light, supplemented by a low-wattage LED if the room is particularly dark.

A consistent photoperiod of roughly twelve hours of light and twelve hours of darkness mimics the subtropical conditions these insects experience in their native Australian habitat. There is no need for specialized UV lighting — Giant Pricklies are not UV-dependent the way many reptiles are, and standard room lighting or a simple daylight-spectrum LED on a timer is entirely adequate.

Heat lamps and incandescent bulbs are generally unsuitable because they produce intense localized heat and can dehydrate the enclosure rapidly. If supplemental warmth is needed, thermostat-controlled heat mats attached to the outside of the enclosure wall provide a gentle, even heat source that does not compromise humidity levels.

Multi-Insect & Breeding Setups

Giant Prickly Stick Insects are naturally gregarious and do well in group housing. A colony enclosure should be sized to accommodate the expected adult population with ample vertical space for simultaneous molting. For a colony of ten to fifteen adults, an enclosure measuring at least sixty centimeters tall by forty centimeters wide by forty centimeters deep provides comfortable living space.

Breeding colonies produce large numbers of eggs. Females drop eggs from elevated perches, and the eggs fall to the substrate where they incubate over several months. Keepers who want to manage reproduction should collect eggs regularly and incubate them in a separate container with slightly damp vermiculite or coconut coir. This prevents the main enclosure from becoming overcrowded when dozens of nymphs hatch simultaneously.

Separate rearing enclosures for nymphs are strongly recommended. Hatchling Giant Pricklies are small enough to escape through mesh openings that easily contain adults. Fine-mesh deli cups, small critter keepers, or purpose-built nymph rearing containers with ventilation holes drilled through the lid keep young nymphs secure while allowing fresh food and misting access.

As nymphs grow through successive instars, they can be gradually transitioned to the main colony enclosure. Most keepers move juveniles once they reach third or fourth instar, at which point they are large enough not to escape through standard mesh and robust enough to compete with adults for perching and feeding space. Monitoring population density at each stage prevents the cascading problems of overcrowding, food competition, and failed molts.
