Purple pincher hermit crabs are true omnivores and scavengers in the wild, consuming everything from fallen fruit and decaying leaves to carrion and algae. This diverse natural diet means captive hermit crabs require a varied menu that spans proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and an especially important supply of calcium and carotenoids. A monotonous diet is one of the most common mistakes new keepers make, leading to nutritional deficiencies that can stall molting and shorten lifespan.
Calcium is arguably the single most critical nutrient for any hermit crab. Without adequate calcium intake, the exoskeleton cannot harden properly after a molt, leaving the crab vulnerable and potentially unable to survive the process. Carotenoids — the pigments found in orange and red fruits and vegetables — are equally vital because they support the vibrant coloring that indicates a healthy crab. A diet lacking carotenoids will produce a dull, faded appearance over time.
Beyond calcium and pigments, hermit crabs need trace minerals like copper, magnesium, and iodine to support proper hemolymph function, nerve signaling, and hormonal regulation of molting cycles. Protein from animal sources supports tissue regeneration during molting, while plant-based carbohydrates provide day-to-day energy. The goal when selecting food products is to approximate the breadth of nutrients a crab would encounter foraging across a tropical forest floor.
It is also worth understanding that hermit crabs eat in very small quantities. They are grazers, not meal feeders, and will pick at food throughout the night. This means food freshness matters enormously — wet foods spoil quickly in a warm, humid habitat, and stale food will simply be ignored. Portion control and regular rotation are key to maintaining both nutrition and appetite.
