Water dishes are among the most important accessories in any hermit crab setup, and choosing the right ones directly affects both hydration and safety. Every enclosure needs two separate pools — one for dechlorinated fresh water and one for properly mixed marine salt water. The dishes must be deep enough for the largest crab to fully submerge its shell, which is how hermit crabs replenish the small reserve of water they carry inside their shell to keep their gills moist.

The most critical design feature of any water dish is accessibility. Crabs must be able to climb in and out without assistance, because a crab that enters a pool and cannot exit will eventually drown from exhaustion. Dishes with textured interior walls, built-in ramps, or stepped edges solve this problem. Natural stone dishes with rough surfaces work well, as do molded resin pools designed specifically for invertebrate habitats. Some keepers embed smooth river stones or pieces of coral inside the dish to create footholds.

Material matters for longevity and safety. Food-grade resin, glazed ceramic, and natural stone are all suitable. Avoid any dish with metallic glazes or coatings, as these can leach compounds into the water that are harmful to crustaceans. Plastic dishes are functional but tend to develop scratches that harbor bacteria over time, requiring more frequent replacement than harder materials.

Maintenance is straightforward but must be consistent. Both pools should be emptied, scrubbed, and refilled every two to three days at minimum. Hermit crabs deposit waste, substrate particles, and food debris in their water, so pools that look clean to the eye may still contain elevated levels of bacteria. A dedicated set of scrub brushes — one for each pool, never cross-used — and a rinse with hot water before refilling keeps the pools sanitary without the need for chemical cleaners.

Thermometers & Hygrometers

Accurate temperature and humidity monitoring is essential for hermit crab survival, and inexpensive dial gauges are not up to the task. Dial-style thermometers and hygrometers, commonly sold in pet stores as part of reptile accessory kits, are notoriously inaccurate — often off by as much as ten degrees or fifteen percent humidity — and their readings drift further over time. Digital gauges with external probes provide far more reliable measurements and are worth the modest additional investment.

Placement of monitoring instruments determines how useful the readings are. The probe should be positioned at substrate level in the center of the enclosure, not attached to the glass wall near the top. Conditions at the top of the tank can differ significantly from conditions at substrate level, where the crabs actually live. If the enclosure has a heat pad on the back wall, placing a second probe near the warm zone allows you to monitor the temperature gradient and ensure neither the warm end nor the cool end falls outside the safe range.

Many digital units offer minimum and maximum memory, recording the highest and lowest readings over a given period. This feature is extremely valuable because the most dangerous temperature and humidity swings often happen overnight or when no one is home. Checking the min/max readings each morning provides a clear picture of environmental stability without requiring constant observation.

For keepers managing multiple enclosures, wireless multi-channel monitors that display readings from several probes on a single base unit simplify monitoring and reduce the number of individual gadgets. Some advanced models can send alerts to a smartphone if temperature or humidity falls outside a programmed range, providing an early warning system that can prevent a crisis during vacations or work hours. Whatever device you choose, calibrate it annually against a known-accurate reference to ensure continued reliability.

Spray Bottles & Misting Equipment

Maintaining humidity in a hermit crab enclosure requires regular misting, and the tool you use for that job affects both the consistency of your results and the amount of time you spend on daily maintenance. A basic handheld spray bottle is the simplest option — inexpensive, widely available, and effective for small enclosures. Look for a bottle with a fine mist nozzle rather than a stream setting, as a gentle mist distributes moisture evenly across the substrate and decor without creating puddles.

The water used for misting must be dechlorinated. Chlorine and chloramine are harmful to hermit crab gill tissue, and repeated exposure through misting can cause chronic respiratory damage even when the water pools themselves are properly treated. Fill the spray bottle from the same treated water supply used for the fresh water pool, and label the bottle clearly if other household members share misting duties.

For larger enclosures or busy keepers who struggle with daily misting consistency, automatic misting systems designed for reptile terrariums can be adapted for hermit crab use. These systems use a small pump and a network of nozzles to deliver timed mist bursts at programmed intervals. When properly calibrated, they maintain humidity with minimal human intervention. The key consideration when using an automatic system is avoiding over-misting, which can waterlog the substrate and promote mold growth. Start with short, infrequent bursts and adjust based on hygrometer readings.

Regardless of the misting method, target the substrate surface and decor rather than misting the crabs directly. While a light mist is not harmful, hermit crabs generally dislike being sprayed and will retreat into their shells if misted directly. Misting the enclosure in the late afternoon, an hour or two before the crabs become active, allows the moisture to distribute naturally and brings humidity to optimal levels right when the crabs emerge for their nightly activity.

Substrate & Replacement Supplies

Keeping a supply of substrate materials on hand ensures you are never caught short during a maintenance cycle or emergency tank reset. Play sand — specifically the type sold for children's sandboxes, which is washed, screened, and free of chemical additives — is the primary substrate component and is best purchased in bulk since it is heavy and used in large quantities. Store it in sealed bins to keep it dry and free of contaminants.

Coconut fiber, the second component of the ideal substrate mix, is sold in both loose bags and compressed bricks. Compressed bricks are the more economical option for long-term keepers, as they take up far less storage space and expand dramatically when hydrated. One standard brick typically yields six to eight liters of usable substrate when fully expanded. Hydrate bricks with dechlorinated water only, and squeeze out excess moisture before mixing with sand to achieve the correct sandcastle consistency.

A five-to-one ratio of sand to coconut fiber by volume is the widely accepted standard, but some keepers adjust this ratio slightly based on their climate and enclosure design. In very humid environments, a higher proportion of sand improves drainage and reduces the risk of anaerobic pockets forming deep in the substrate. In drier climates, a slightly higher proportion of coconut fiber helps retain moisture. The key indicator is always the squeeze test — a handful should hold its shape without dripping.

Substrate depth should never be compromised, so calculate your tank's volume requirements before purchasing. A twenty-gallon long tank with an eight-inch substrate depth requires approximately forty to fifty pounds of mixed substrate. Running out mid-fill and using a thinner layer is not an acceptable shortcut, as insufficient depth directly endangers any crab that attempts to molt. Keep at least one full replacement batch in storage so you can execute a substrate change promptly when needed without waiting for a delivery.

Water Treatment Products

Water treatment is a non-negotiable part of hermit crab husbandry, and having the right products on hand at all times prevents dangerous lapses in water quality. A high-quality dechlorinator that neutralizes both chlorine and chloramine is the minimum requirement for treating fresh water. Many municipal water supplies use chloramine rather than chlorine, and chloramine does not dissipate by simply letting water sit — it requires chemical neutralization. Check your local water utility's annual report to know which disinfectant your supply uses.

Marine salt mix is the second essential water treatment product. This is not table salt, not aquarium salt marketed for freshwater fish, and not rock salt — it is the specific salt blend formulated for saltwater aquariums, containing the full spectrum of trace minerals found in ocean water. The salt is mixed with dechlorinated fresh water to a target specific gravity of 1.021 to 1.025, measured with a hydrometer or refractometer. Mixing by taste or color is not accurate enough and risks creating a solution that is either too dilute to be useful or concentrated enough to be harmful.

A hydrometer or refractometer is therefore a necessary companion to the salt mix. Hydrometers are the more affordable option — floating glass instruments that measure the density of the solution relative to pure water. Refractometers are more precise and easier to read but cost more. Either tool should be rinsed with fresh water after every use to prevent salt crystal buildup from skewing future readings.

Store all water treatment products in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight. Marine salt mix is hygroscopic and will absorb moisture from the air if left in an open container, causing clumping and degradation. Repackage large bags into sealed containers with tight-fitting lids. Dechlorinator solutions have a shelf life — check the expiration date and replace expired product, as degraded dechlorinator may not fully neutralize chloramine, leaving treated water unsafe for your crabs.

Maintenance & Cleaning Tools

A dedicated set of cleaning tools reserved exclusively for hermit crab use prevents cross-contamination from household cleaning chemicals and keeps maintenance efficient. At minimum, the kit should include a small siphon or turkey baster for spot-cleaning debris from the substrate surface, two soft-bristle scrub brushes (one for each water pool), a small dustpan and hand broom for substrate work, and a spray bottle filled with plain dechlorinated water for rinsing surfaces.

Never use soap, detergent, bleach, or any chemical cleaner inside a hermit crab enclosure or on any accessory that will go back into the habitat. Residues from these products are extremely toxic to crustaceans, even in trace amounts that are invisible and odorless to humans. Hot water and physical scrubbing are sufficient for routine cleaning. For items that need deeper sanitization — such as decor that has developed algae or a dish with persistent biofilm — boiling for five to ten minutes is safe and effective.

Spot-cleaning should be done daily or every other day. This means removing visible waste, uneaten food, and any debris that has fallen into the water pools. A full substrate surface clean — raking the top half-inch with a small fork or comb to break up compacted areas and redistribute moisture — can be done weekly. Deep substrate changes should only be performed when necessary, ideally no more than once every six months, and never when a crab is buried.

Keep a maintenance log to track cleaning dates, substrate changes, water parameter readings, and any observations about crab behavior. This record becomes invaluable over time, revealing patterns that might otherwise go unnoticed — for example, a correlation between a particular water brand and increased hiding behavior, or the typical interval between deep cleans before mite populations begin to appear. Even a simple notebook or phone note with dated entries provides a useful reference that improves the quality of care over the long term.
