The Tennessee Walking Horse is a medium-to-large breed with a naturally efficient metabolism that can work in its favor or become a management challenge depending on workload and forage quality. Most individuals do well on a forage-first diet, consuming roughly two percent of their body weight in hay or pasture per day. Because the breed's signature running walk is a smooth, low-impact gait, caloric demands during light trail work are moderate compared to high-performance sport horses, and overfeeding is a more common problem than underfeeding.
Protein requirements shift with age and activity. Growing foals and lactating mares need diets in the twelve-to-fourteen percent crude protein range, while mature horses in light to moderate work can thrive on ten to twelve percent. Amino acid quality matters as much as total protein content, so look for feeds that list lysine and methionine levels on the tag. A deficiency in these essential amino acids can show up as poor hoof growth, dull coat, and slow muscle recovery even when overall protein numbers look adequate.
Mineral balance is another area that deserves close attention. The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio should stay in the neighborhood of two-to-one, and an inverted ratio—common when horses eat large amounts of unfortified grain—can lead to skeletal issues over time. Selenium and vitamin E are especially important for horses in regions with selenium-deficient soils, as low levels are linked to muscle disorders. A forage analysis from your local extension office is the single most useful tool for building a rational feeding program because it tells you exactly what your hay provides and what gaps your concentrate or supplement needs to fill.
Water intake is the most overlooked nutritional factor. A Tennessee Walker in moderate work during warm weather can drink ten to twelve gallons per day, and even mild dehydration impairs gut motility and thermoregulation. Electrolyte supplementation becomes relevant during sustained trail rides, endurance conditioning, or hot-weather turnout. Offering free-choice plain salt in addition to a mineral block encourages adequate water consumption year round.
