The Marwari is a medium-sized horse, typically standing between 14.2 and 15.2 hands, but its spirited temperament and athletic build mean it benefits from generous living space. A standard box stall of 12 by 12 feet is the minimum for a horse of this size, though a 12-by-14-foot stall provides noticeably more comfort and reduces the risk of casting, which occurs when a horse lies down and becomes trapped against a wall with insufficient room to roll upright.

Beyond the stall itself, daily turnout is essential for the Marwari's physical and mental health. This is a breed that evolved ranging across open desert terrain, and prolonged confinement can lead to stereotypic behaviors such as weaving, cribbing, and stall walking. A minimum paddock size of roughly half an acre per horse allows for meaningful movement, and larger pastures of one to two acres per horse are ideal where land permits.

Aisle width in a barn should be at least ten to twelve feet to allow safe passage when leading horses and to provide adequate airflow. Ceiling height matters too: a minimum of ten feet prevents head injuries and improves ventilation. The Marwari's distinctive inward-curving ears are a point of pride for owners, and a low ceiling or protruding fixture that causes an ear injury is both a health risk and a heartbreak.

For owners who keep Marwaris primarily outdoors, the total acreage needed depends on pasture quality, climate, and stocking density. In lush temperate regions, one to two acres per horse may suffice, while arid or semi-arid landscapes with sparse vegetation may require significantly more land to prevent overgrazing and soil degradation.

Stalls & Barns

Stall construction should prioritize safety, durability, and ventilation. Hardwood kick boards lining the lower four feet of stall walls protect against damage from hooves and prevent a horse from kicking through the wall into an adjacent stall. The upper portion can be fitted with steel mesh or grillwork that allows the horse to see its neighbors, which reduces isolation stress while maintaining a physical barrier.

Flooring is one of the most important decisions in stall design. Rubber stall mats over a compacted base of crushed stone or clay provide cushioning for joints, insulate against cold, and are easy to clean. Concrete floors are durable and simple to disinfect but are hard on legs and require thick matting. Ridge vents, cupolas, windows that open, and fans all contribute to airflow. A well-ventilated barn may feel drafty to a human standing in the aisle, but horses generate substantial body heat and tolerate cold air far better than they tolerate stagnant, ammonia-laden air.

Run-In Sheds & Field Shelters

For Marwaris kept primarily outdoors, a run-in shed provides voluntary shelter from sun, rain, wind, and insects without the confinement of a closed stall. The open-front design allows horses to come and go freely, which aligns well with the Marwari's independent nature and preference for movement. A three-sided structure with the open side facing away from prevailing winds is the standard configuration.

Sizing a run-in shed depends on the number of horses sharing it. A general guideline is roughly 100 to 150 square feet per horse. Undersized shelters create competition and can lead to dominant horses excluding subordinates, leaving the lowest-ranking animal exposed to the elements. If the herd includes horses with significant rank differences, providing two smaller shelters is often better than one large one.

The roof pitch should be steep enough to shed rain and snow effectively, and the overhang on the open side should extend at least two to three feet to prevent wind-driven rain from reaching the interior. Metal roofing on a wooden frame is the most common and cost-effective construction. Insulation is unnecessary in most climates, since the shelter's primary purpose is wind and precipitation protection rather than temperature control.

Flooring inside a run-in shed takes a beating from hooves and weather. A base of compacted gravel topped with several inches of crusher dust or decomposed granite drains well and holds up better than bare earth, which turns to mud in wet conditions. Stall mats can be placed over the gravel base in areas where horses tend to stand for extended periods, adding comfort and reducing dust.

Fencing & Turnout Areas

Fencing is the single most important safety investment in any horse property, and the Marwari's alertness and athleticism make secure, visible fencing especially important. The breed's sharp senses and reactive nature mean it is more likely than a phlegmatic draft cross to spook and test a fence line at speed. Board fencing, pipe fencing, and high-tensile polymer rail are all excellent options that combine visibility, strength, and a degree of give on impact.

Barbed wire should never be used for horses under any circumstances. It causes devastating lacerations and entanglement injuries that can be career-ending or fatal. Smooth wire, while less dangerous than barbed, is difficult for horses to see and can cause serious cuts if a horse runs through it. If wire fencing is the only affordable option, adding a top rail of visible board or tape and using smooth, high-tensile wire with proper tension reduces the risk.

Fence height for horses should be a minimum of four and a half to five feet. The Marwari is not generally known as an escape artist, but stallions, horses housed near unfamiliar animals, and any horse in a panic can clear a fence that is too low. Gates should be the same height as the fence line and should swing smoothly on hinges that a horse cannot catch a leg or halter on. Latches need to be horse-proof, as many equines learn to open simple snap or chain closures.

Turnout footing management is an ongoing task. Mud around gates, water troughs, and feeding areas develops quickly in wet climates and contributes to thrush, scratches, and soft-tissue injuries. Installing a gravel pad or geotextile fabric beneath high-traffic zones channels water away and provides a stable surface. Rotational grazing, where the pasture is divided into sections and horses are moved periodically, allows vegetation to recover and reduces parasite exposure.

Climate Considerations

The Marwari's desert heritage gives it a natural advantage in hot, dry climates. The breed's fine coat, lean build, and efficient thermoregulation make it well suited to high temperatures that would stress heavier, thicker-coated breeds. However, this same adaptation means the Marwari may be less tolerant of cold, wet, and windy conditions than breeds originating in northern Europe or the British Isles.

In cold climates, providing adequate shelter is more important for the Marwari than for many other breeds. While the horse will grow a winter coat, it may not develop the dense undercoat that cold-climate breeds produce. A well-fitted winter blanket is a practical solution for Marwaris living in regions with sustained freezing temperatures, heavy snowfall, or cold rain. Blanketing should be managed carefully: removing the blanket during warm spells, checking for rubs and proper fit, and ensuring the horse is dry before blanketing are all important to prevent skin issues.

Heat management in extremely hot and humid environments is also worth planning for, despite the breed's warm-weather origins. High humidity impairs evaporative cooling, which is a horse's primary thermoregulation mechanism. Shade, fans, misting systems, and access to clean water become critical during summer heat waves. Scheduling work for early morning or evening and monitoring for signs of heat stress, such as rapid breathing, excessive sweating or a sudden lack of sweating, and elevated heart rate, are sensible precautions.

Insects are a year-round or seasonal challenge depending on geography, and housing design plays a role in managing them. Fans in stalls and shelters discourage flies. Screened windows and doors reduce insect entry into barns. Eliminating standing water near housing areas reduces mosquito breeding, and maintaining clean bedding and removing manure promptly limits fly populations at the source.

Multi-Horse Properties

Many Marwari owners keep more than one horse, and housing design for multi-horse properties involves balancing social needs with safety. Horses are herd animals that benefit psychologically from the company of others, but personality clashes, resource guarding, and rank disputes are common when horses share space. Stall layouts that allow visual and limited physical contact between neighbors, such as half-walls with grillwork, satisfy social needs while preventing biting and kicking injuries.

Turnout groups should be assembled thoughtfully. Introducing a new horse to an established group requires a gradual process: visual contact across a fence for several days, followed by turnout in adjacent paddocks, and finally supervised introduction into the shared space. Having enough room for a subordinate horse to move away from an aggressor without being cornered is essential. Round or irregularly shaped paddocks with no tight corners are safer for group turnout than long, narrow runs.

Feeding in group turnout requires extra attention. Dominant horses will monopolize a single feeding station, so providing one more feeding point than the number of horses in the group and spacing them well apart ensures that every animal gets its share. The same principle applies to water sources: at least two water points in any group turnout area prevent a dominant horse from guarding access.

Manure management scales with the number of horses and has a direct impact on housing quality. A single horse produces roughly 50 pounds of manure per day, so a property with several horses generates a substantial volume. A composting system located downhill and downwind from the barn keeps the property clean, reduces fly breeding habitat, and eventually produces valuable soil amendment. Spreading uncomposted manure on active pastures is not recommended, as it perpetuates the parasite cycle.
