Sizing for a run-in shed follows a general guideline of roughly one hundred to one hundred fifty square feet per horse. A single Knabstrupper needs a shed of at least twelve by twelve feet; a pair needs closer to twelve by twenty-four. Undersized shelters create competition and the risk of a dominant horse trapping a subordinate in a corner, which defeats the purpose of voluntary access.

Roofing material should be durable enough to withstand wind, snow load, and the occasional horse rubbing against structural posts. Each offers high visibility, some degree of flex on impact, and a low risk of entanglement.

Wire fencing is a topic of ongoing debate. Smooth high-tensile wire with proper tension and spacing can be an economical solution for large acreages, but it is less visible to horses and more likely to cause lacerations if a horse runs into it. Adding a top rail of wood or vinyl improves visibility significantly. Blanketing is a management decision that depends on whether the horse is body-clipped, how severe the winter is, and whether the horse has reliable shelter access. An unclipped horse with a full winter coat and access to a run-in shed may not need a blanket at all, even in subfreezing temperatures. A clipped horse in active training will need layered blanketing appropriate to the ambient temperature and weather conditions. Over-blanketing — putting a heavy blanket on a horse that does not need it — can cause overheating and sweating, which leads to chilling when the blanket is removed.

In hot and humid climates, heat dissipation becomes the priority. Fans in barns, shaded turnout areas, and access to cool, clean water are essential. Horses with large areas of dark skin beneath their spotted coats may absorb more solar radiation, making shade access particularly important. Misters and sprinkler systems in turnout areas can help, but they also raise humidity, so they are most effective in dry-heat regions.

Horses with extensive white or pink-skinned areas on their faces and bodies — which is common in some Knabstrupper coat patterns — are susceptible to sunburn. Fly masks with UV protection, equine-safe sunscreen applied to vulnerable areas, and turnout scheduling that avoids peak sun hours all help reduce the risk of solar dermatitis and its long-term complications.

Multi-Horse Properties

Knabstruppers are generally sociable and agreeable herdmates, which simplifies multi-horse management compared to more reactive or dominant breeds. Still, introducing a new horse to an established group should always be done gradually. A period of fence-line introduction — where the new horse is turned out in an adjacent paddock where the herd can see, smell, and interact without full contact — reduces the risk of injury during the integration process.

Stall layout in multi-horse barns should account for individual temperaments and social dynamics. Horses that are aggressive toward neighbors should not share a wall with a timid companion. Stalls with solid lower dividers and grilled upper sections allow social interaction while preventing biting or kicking through the barrier. Some barns use stall fronts with yokes or openings that let horses extend their heads into the aisle, promoting a sense of connection without free-roaming risk.

Shared resources — water troughs, hay feeders, and salt or mineral blocks — can become flashpoints for conflict if not distributed thoughtfully.
