Wearable health monitors designed for horses have matured considerably in recent years, moving from novelty gadgets to genuinely useful management tools. These devices typically attach to a halter, surcingle, or leg band and track metrics such as daily movement levels, resting heart rate trends, time spent lying down, rolling frequency, and overall activity patterns. For Andalusian owners, this data can reveal subtle changes in behavior and comfort that are difficult to detect through observation alone, particularly for horses kept at boarding facilities where the owner is not present around the clock.
Heart rate and heart rate variability monitoring provides insight into the horse's stress levels, fitness progression, and recovery quality. A gradual increase in resting heart rate over days or weeks can signal pain, illness, or chronic stress before clinical signs become obvious. Heart rate variability—the variation in time between individual heartbeats—is increasingly recognized as a marker of autonomic nervous system balance and is used by some trainers to guide rest and recovery scheduling.
Movement pattern analysis can be especially valuable for detecting early lameness or discomfort. Some monitors use accelerometer data to flag asymmetries in gait, changes in stride length, or unusual amounts of weight shifting at rest. While these systems do not replace a veterinary lameness evaluation, they can prompt an earlier examination and provide the veterinarian with objective data to complement the clinical assessment.
Sleep and rest tracking is a less obvious but important application. Horses require periods of recumbent sleep for proper mental and physical recovery, and some horses—particularly those in new environments, uncomfortable stalls, or socially stressful herd situations—do not lie down enough to achieve adequate REM sleep. Monitoring systems that log lying time and rolling behavior help identify horses that may be sleep-deprived, allowing management changes before the problem manifests as performance decline or dangerous episodes of sleep collapse.
