This means their diet should be carefully managed to avoid excess calories while still supplying the vitamins, minerals, and protein required for strong hooves, a healthy coat, and sustained energy during work.

Because of their Iberian heritage, Andalusians evolved in semi-arid landscapes where grazing was seasonally limited and forage was often coarse and low in sugar. Their digestive systems are well adapted to extracting nutrition from moderate-quality roughage, which makes them more susceptible to metabolic issues when fed the rich, high-starch diets common in many modern equine programs. Owners should monitor body condition scores closely and adjust feed volumes with the seasons.

Protein requirements vary with workload and life stage. A mature Andalusian in light work generally does well on ten to twelve percent crude protein in the total diet, while horses in heavy training, breeding mares, and growing youngstock may need slightly more. Forage Selection

High-quality forage should form the foundation of every Andalusian's diet, ideally making up at least sixty to seventy percent of total daily intake by weight. For most adult Andalusians, that translates to roughly one and a half to two percent of body weight in hay or pasture per day. Grass hays such as timothy, orchard grass, and Bermuda are generally excellent choices because they provide adequate fiber without excessive sugar or protein.

Alfalfa can be a useful supplement for hard-working horses, lactating mares, or underweight individuals, but it should be fed judiciously in this breed. Many Andalusians in light to moderate work need little or no concentrate feed beyond quality forage and a ration balancer. While research results are mixed, many owners report improved comfort and mobility. Treats should be kept small and low in sugar. Carrot pieces, hay cubes, and small portions of apple are traditional favorites that pose minimal metabolic risk when offered in moderation. Avoid commercial treats loaded with molasses or corn syrup, and be cautious with treats marketed as grain-free that may still contain high-sugar ingredients. Treats are a training and bonding tool, not a calorie source.

Feeds to Avoid

High-starch sweet feeds are among the most problematic options for the typical Andalusian. These products rely heavily on corn, oats, and molasses to boost palatability, but they deliver rapid sugar spikes that stress insulin regulation and increase the risk of laminitis in metabolically predisposed horses. Even Andalusians without a history of metabolic issues can develop problems over time on consistently high-sugar diets.

Certain forages deserve caution as well. Endophyte-infected fescue should be avoided entirely for broodmares, as it can cause prolonged gestation, thickened placentas, and reduced milk production. For all horses, fescue with high endophyte levels has been linked to reduced feed efficiency and heat intolerance. If fescue is the primary pasture grass in your area, test for endophyte levels or overseed with safer varieties.

Lawn clippings, garden waste, and ornamental plant trimmings should never be offered as feed. Grass clippings ferment rapidly and can cause severe colic or laminitis. Many common garden and landscaping plants—including yew, oleander, red maple, and black walnut—are toxic to horses even in small quantities. Keep pasture fences well away from ornamental plantings and educate anyone with property access about the risks.

Byproduct feeds and cheap fillers that use excessive beet pulp fines, rice hulls, or peanut hulls as primary ingredients may meet minimum fiber requirements on paper but offer poor digestibility and low nutritional value. Read ingredient panels critically and prioritize products where the first several ingredients are recognizable, whole feed sources rather than industrial processing residues.

Hydration & Electrolytes

An adult Andalusian at rest drinks roughly eight to twelve gallons of water per day, with that figure climbing significantly during hot weather, heavy work, or lactation. Clean, fresh water should be available at all times in both stall and turnout environments. Horses are sensitive to water taste and temperature, and many will reduce intake if the water is stale, too cold, or contaminated with algae or feed debris. Automatic waterers should be checked daily for flow and cleanliness.

Electrolyte supplementation becomes important during sustained exercise, travel, or extended heat exposure. Horses lose sodium, chloride, and potassium through sweat at rates that plain water cannot replenish. A well-formulated electrolyte product mixed into feed or dissolved in a secondary water bucket encourages drinking and helps maintain proper hydration status. Avoid products that list sugar or dextrose as the first ingredient, as these prioritize palatability over electrolyte delivery.

Salt should be available free-choice year-round, either as a plain white salt block or loose salt in a sheltered feeder. Many horses do not consume adequate sodium from blocks alone, particularly in humid climates where blocks soften and become unappealing. Adding one to two tablespoons of plain table salt to the daily feed is a reliable way to ensure baseline sodium intake regardless of block consumption.

During winter months, water intake often drops because horses are less inclined to drink ice-cold water. Heated buckets or tank heaters that maintain water temperature between forty-five and sixty-five degrees Fahrenheit can make a measurable difference in daily consumption, reducing the risk of impaction colic that commonly spikes during cold weather.

Feeding Schedule & Management

Consistency is the single most important principle in equine feeding management. Horses are creatures of routine whose digestive systems function best with regular, predictable meal times. The equine stomach produces acid continuously, and long gaps between meals increase the risk of gastric ulcers. Ideally, no Andalusian should go more than four to five hours without access to forage during the day.

Slow-feed hay nets and small-hole hay bags are practical tools for extending forage consumption time without increasing total volume. These devices mimic the natural trickle-feeding pattern of grazing, reduce boredom and stall vices, and help prevent the digestive disruptions that come from bolting large meals quickly. Double-netting or using nets with one-inch openings can slow even the most aggressive eater.

Feed changes of any kind—new hay cutting, different concentrate, added supplements—should be transitioned gradually over seven to fourteen days. Abrupt dietary shifts disrupt the microbial populations in the hindgut that are responsible for fiber fermentation, potentially triggering colic, diarrhea, or laminitis. Even switching between hay types of similar nutritional profile warrants a blending period.
