This pattern of hide-then-forage defines what enrichment should look like for this species. The most effective aquarium enrichment replicates the environmental complexity that triggers natural behaviors: exploring, hiding, surfacing, foraging, and socializing with conspecifics. A bare tank with nowhere to hide and nothing to investigate produces bored, stressed fish that spend their time pressed against the glass or wedged behind equipment.

Social dynamics also play a role in enrichment. Upside-Down Catfish are gregarious and interact regularly within their group, jostling for preferred resting spots, following each other during foraging excursions, and occasionally displaying to one another. Instead, enrichment means creating an environment rich enough in structure, texture, and variation that the fish can express their full behavioral repertoire. Hiding Spots & Caves

These structures serve a dual purpose: they provide the sense of security the fish need during their inactive daytime period, and they create surfaces beneath which the fish can practice their inverted resting behavior. Without adequate hiding options, the catfish will attempt to wedge themselves behind filters, heaters, or other equipment, which is both stressful and potentially dangerous.

Commercially available aquarium caves come in a wide variety of materials and styles, from natural-looking resin formations to smooth ceramic tubes and coconut shell hides. For Upside-Down Catfish, the interior ceiling of the cave matters most. Flat or gently concave interior surfaces allow the fish to cling comfortably in their inverted position. Current & Flow Features

While they prefer calm to moderate currents overall, a gentle stream from a small powerhead or adjustable filter outlet gives the fish an area of moving water to interact with. Catfish that have access to varying flow zones within the tank tend to be more active and display a wider range of swimming behaviors than those in completely still water.

Positioning the flow source so that it creates a current along one side or end of the tank, while leaving the opposite area calm, gives the fish the choice to engage with or avoid the moving water. This zoning approach is important because constant, inescapable current stresses nocturnal species that need restful periods. The fish should always have the option to retreat to still water when they choose.

Air stones and bubble walls create gentle upward currents that some Upside-Down Catfish find engaging. The rising column of bubbles provides visual and tactile stimulation, and some individuals will swim through or alongside the bubble stream. Adjusting the powerhead direction, changing the filter outlet angle, or temporarily adding a small circulation pump gives the fish new hydrodynamic features to explore. As with décor rearrangement, these changes should be moderate and infrequent to avoid chronic stress, but occasional adjustments keep the environment from becoming entirely predictable.

Foraging & Feeding Enrichment

Turning feeding time into an active foraging experience is one of the most impactful forms of enrichment for Upside-Down Catfish. Rather than dropping all food in one spot, scatter small portions across multiple areas of the tank. This forces the fish to search, move, and explore, mimicking the dispersed food sources they would encounter in a natural river environment.

Feeding clips and suction-cup vegetable holders allow you to attach food items to the glass or décor at various heights in the tank. A piece of blanched zucchini clipped near a driftwood branch, or an algae wafer pressed into a feeding dish placed beneath an overhang, encourages the catfish to locate and work at the food rather than simply consuming whatever lands in front of them. Positioning food near the surface takes advantage of their natural inverted feeding posture.

Target feeding with a turkey baster or pipette lets you deliver small quantities of frozen food precisely where the catfish are resting or foraging. This technique is especially useful in community tanks where faster species might otherwise consume all the food before the nocturnal catfish have a chance to feed. Directing a stream of brine shrimp beneath a driftwood branch creates a focused foraging event that engages the catfish without requiring them to compete at the surface.

Occasionally withholding food for a day and then scattering a slightly larger meal across the tank the following evening simulates the feast-and-fast rhythm of wild feeding patterns. This approach increases foraging motivation and activity levels during the feeding event, producing more natural and vigorous behavior. The key is to keep the fasting period short, no more than one day, to avoid nutritional stress while still creating a meaningful behavioral stimulus.

DIY & Budget Options

Terra cotta flower pots are among the most cost-effective and fish-safe enrichment items available. A small pot placed on its side creates an instant cave, and the slightly rough interior surface provides good grip for an inverted catfish. Sanding any sharp edges on the drainage hole and rinsing the pot thoroughly before use are the only preparation steps needed. These pots cost almost nothing and can be replaced easily if they become algae-covered or cracked.

Coconut shell hides made from halved and cleaned coconut shells are another popular DIY option. After removing all the coconut meat and fiber, boiling the shell halves for twenty minutes sanitizes them and leaches out any residual oils. The natural curved interior of a coconut half is an ideal inverted resting surface, and the organic look blends well with driftwood and planted aquascapes.

PVC pipe sections can function as simple, durable caves, though they lack the aesthetic appeal of natural materials. A short length of dark PVC pipe with a diameter of one and a half to two inches provides adequate shelter for a single catfish or a small pair. Attaching a thin layer of aquarium silicone and pressing fine gravel or sand onto the exterior can disguise the synthetic appearance.

Collecting driftwood and smooth river rocks from clean, unpolluted waterways is a free enrichment source for keepers who have access to suitable natural areas. All collected materials should be scrubbed, boiled or baked to kill pathogens, and soaked until they sink before being added to the aquarium. Locally collected materials often have more interesting shapes and textures than commercially available pieces, and the process of selecting and preparing them is part of the hobby's appeal.
