Substrate & Décor

River sand in natural tan or brown tones mimics their native habitat and provides a visually appealing base. An automatic timer is the simplest way to maintain consistency, since manual switching inevitably leads to irregular schedules. Irregular lighting can disrupt feeding patterns and increase stress in nocturnal species.

Moonlight or blue night-light LEDs, available on many modern fixtures, are a worthwhile feature for Upside-Down Catfish keepers. These low-intensity lights allow you to observe the fish during their most active hours without disturbing their natural behavior. Watching a group of Upside-Down Catfish emerge, invert, and forage under moonlight simulation is one of the genuine pleasures of keeping this species.

Water Parameters

Upside-Down Catfish thrive in tropical freshwater conditions with a temperature range of seventy-two to eighty-two degrees Fahrenheit. Within this range, a steady temperature around seventy-six to seventy-eight degrees provides a comfortable middle ground. Sudden temperature swings are more harmful than a reading slightly outside the ideal range, so a reliable heater with an accurate thermostat is essential.

The preferred pH range for this species is six-point-zero to seven-point-five, with a slightly acidic to neutral range being ideal. In practice, Upside-Down Catfish are quite adaptable to a range of pH values as long as the water is stable. Chasing a perfect number with chemical buffers is less important than maintaining consistency, since fluctuating pH is far more stressful than a stable reading at the higher or lower end of the range.

Water hardness should fall in the soft to moderately hard range, roughly four to fifteen dGH. Fish sourced from captive-bred stock tend to be more flexible on hardness than wild-caught individuals. If your tap water falls within this range, no adjustment is typically needed. Very hard water can be blended with reverse osmosis water to bring hardness down if necessary.

Ammonia and nitrite must remain at zero at all times, which is achieved through proper cycling of the tank before introducing fish and maintaining adequate filtration afterward. Community Tank Considerations

Upside-Down Catfish are peaceful community fish that coexist well with a wide range of similarly tempered species. Ideal tankmates include small to medium tetras, rasboras, peaceful barbs, Corydoras catfish, and smaller gouramis. The key criterion is that tankmates should not be aggressive, overly territorial, or large enough to view the catfish as prey.

Avoiding large cichlids, aggressive species, and fast-moving fin nippers is important. While Upside-Down Catfish are not defenseless, they are not confrontational and will retreat under stress from persistent aggression. Repeated harassment leads to chronic hiding, reduced feeding, and eventually health decline. Even species that are technically compatible on paper can cause problems if individual temperaments clash in a specific tank.

Because Upside-Down Catfish are social and most active in groups, keeping them with at least four to six of their own kind is strongly recommended. Solitary individuals tend to be permanently reclusive, hiding throughout the day and emerging only briefly at night. Shared hiding spots are a consideration in community setups. If the tank includes other cave-dwelling species such as plecos or loaches, ensure there are enough sheltered areas for all inhabitants.
