A well-rounded diet should deliver calcium through multiple sources rather than relying on a single supplement, ensuring steady absorption throughout the molt cycle.

Protein is equally important, particularly in the weeks leading up to a molt when the crab is building new tissue beneath its existing shell. However, an excessively protein-heavy diet can foul brackish water quickly, so balance is key. Aim for a feeding regimen that alternates between protein-rich offerings and plant-based foods, keeping overall water quality stable while meeting the crab's metabolic demands.

Thaw frozen portions in a small cup of tank water before offering to avoid temperature shock and reduce the risk of introducing contaminants.

Freeze-dried krill and tubifex worms are shelf-stable alternatives that deliver high protein content without the hassle of frozen storage. They can be dropped directly onto a feeding ledge or into shallow water. However, freeze-dried foods should be pre-soaked for a few minutes before feeding, as dry expansion inside the digestive tract can cause discomfort in smaller crabs.

Many Red Claw Crabs will also rasp at the surface of the cuttlebone directly, consuming small shavings as needed. Replace it once it becomes soft and crumbly.

Powdered calcium supplements designed for reptiles can be lightly dusted onto food items before offering. This approach is particularly useful for ensuring each feeding delivers a controlled dose of calcium without relying on the crab to self-regulate from a passive source like cuttlebone. It also contributes to buffering the pH in the slightly alkaline range that Red Claw Crabs prefer, making it a dual-purpose addition to the filtration system.

Foods to Avoid

Copper is lethal to crustaceans at concentrations far below what fish can tolerate. Many commercial fish foods contain copper sulfate as a color enhancer or preservative, and feeding these products to Red Claw Crabs can cause acute toxicity. Always read ingredient labels carefully and reject any food that lists copper in any form.

Processed human foods such as bread, crackers, chips, or anything containing salt, sugar, or seasoning should never be offered. These items have no nutritional value for a crab and introduce compounds that destabilize water chemistry rapidly. Even small amounts of table salt, which is iodized and contains anti-caking agents, can be harmful in a carefully balanced brackish environment.

Citrus fruits and highly acidic vegetables like tomatoes should be avoided. The acidity can irritate the crab's digestive system and alter water pH unpredictably. Stick to neutral or mildly alkaline vegetables like zucchini, cucumber, and leafy greens, which are both safe and nutritious.

Fatty or oily foods, including certain types of fish like salmon, can create persistent surface films that reduce gas exchange and promote bacterial blooms. While small amounts of healthy fats are acceptable, the confined water volume of most paludariums cannot process the lipid load from fatty protein sources. Lean, white-fleshed proteins are always the safer choice for regular feeding.

Feeding Schedule

Red Claw Crabs are primarily nocturnal feeders, so offering food in the evening aligns with their natural activity cycle and increases the likelihood that the crab will find and consume the food before it degrades. A consistent feeding time also helps the keeper monitor appetite, which is one of the earliest indicators of health issues or an approaching molt.

A standard feeding schedule for an adult Red Claw Crab involves offering a small staple portion every other day, with a protein supplement once or twice per week. On non-feeding days, the crab will scavenge biofilm, algae, and micro-organisms from the substrate and decor, which constitutes a natural and healthy component of its diet. Overfeeding is far more dangerous than underfeeding in a small-volume brackish setup.

During the pre-molt phase, which is often signaled by reduced activity, dulling of shell color, and a tendency to hide, feeding frequency can be increased slightly to support the energy demands of building a new exoskeleton.
