A refractometer is the preferred instrument for measuring specific gravity in a brackish setup. Unlike floating hydrometers, which are prone to air bubble adhesion and reading inaccuracies, a refractometer requires only a single drop of water placed on a glass prism and delivers a precise reading within seconds. Calibrating the refractometer with a reference solution before each testing session ensures ongoing accuracy.

A digital thermometer with an external probe provides continuous temperature monitoring without requiring the keeper to visually check a mounted glass thermometer. Models with high and low temperature memory allow you to identify overnight fluctuations that might otherwise go unnoticed. Position the probe in the water section near the substrate, where the crab spends most of its submerged time, rather than at the surface where readings may be misleadingly warm due to lighting.

KH and GH test kits, while less commonly discussed for brackish setups, provide valuable insight into the buffering capacity and mineral content of the water. Red Claw Crabs benefit from moderately hard water with stable alkalinity, and monitoring these parameters helps prevent the slow pH crashes that can occur in small-volume paludariums as biological waste accumulates between water changes.

Feeding & Maintenance Tools

Long aquarium feeding tongs or tweezers are indispensable for placing food precisely in a paludarium without disturbing the crab or destabilizing decor. Stainless steel tongs with a ten- to twelve-inch reach allow you to position food on a specific ledge, tuck protein supplements into crevices, or retrieve uneaten portions without submerging your hand. This is especially important in brackish water, where dissolved salts can irritate cuts or dry out skin with repeated exposure.

A turkey baster or aquarium-specific siphon bulb is the simplest tool for spot-cleaning debris from the substrate surface. Uneaten food, fecal matter, and decaying plant material collect in low-flow areas and can cause rapid ammonia spikes in the shallow water volumes typical of paludariums. A quick daily pass with a baster takes less than a minute and dramatically reduces the organic load between full water changes.

A small gravel vacuum designed for nano tanks is useful for deeper substrate cleaning during partial water changes. Standard-sized gravel vacuums designed for large aquariums are too powerful for the shallow water in most crab setups and can drain the entire water section in seconds. Nano-sized vacuums with gentle flow give you much better control and allow you to clean around decor and hides without displacing sand or frightening the crab.

A dedicated mixing bucket for preparing brackish replacement water is a must-have accessory. Using the same bucket every time prevents cross-contamination from cleaning products or other household chemicals. Mark the fill level and salt dosage on the bucket exterior so that water change preparation becomes a quick, repeatable process rather than a recalculation each time.

Substrate & Decorative Materials

Fine aquarium sand in a natural tone is the most practical substrate for the water section of a Red Claw Crab paludarium. It supports the crab's natural digging and sifting behaviors, is easy to clean with a gentle vacuum, and does not trap debris the way coarse gravel does. A depth of one to two inches in the aquatic zone is sufficient for foraging without creating deep anaerobic pockets that produce toxic hydrogen sulfide gas.

Crushed coral or aragonite mixed into the aquatic substrate serves as a slow-release calcium and pH buffer. In brackish setups where water volume is limited, this passive supplementation can be the difference between stable and drifting parameters. Start with a ratio of approximately one part crushed coral to three parts sand and adjust based on your water test results over the first few weeks.

Coconut fiber or coco coir is the preferred substrate for the terrestrial section. It retains moisture well, supports burrowing, and is free of the chemical additives found in many commercial potting soils. Purchase bricks of compressed coco coir and hydrate them with dechlorinated water before use. The substrate should be moist enough to hold its shape when squeezed but not waterlogged, as standing water in the land section promotes bacterial and fungal growth.

Indian almond leaves, dried oak leaves, and magnolia leaves make excellent natural additions scattered across both the land and water substrates. They release mild tannins with antimicrobial properties, provide grazing surfaces as biofilm develops, and create natural-looking cover that reduces the visual starkness of bare substrate. Replace leaves as they decompose, typically every two to three weeks, to maintain both their functional and aesthetic benefits.

Hides, Shelters & Caves

Providing adequate hiding spots is not optional for Red Claw Crabs. These animals are prey species in the wild and retain strong instincts to seek enclosed shelter when resting, digesting, or preparing to molt. A crab that lacks access to secure hides will exhibit chronic stress behaviors including reduced appetite, excessive pacing, and aggression toward tankmates. The general rule is one hide per crab minimum, distributed across both land and water zones.

Half coconut shells are the most popular and effective hide for small crustaceans. They are inexpensive, naturally shaped, and can be partially buried in substrate to create a snug cave entrance. Sand the cut edge smooth to prevent the crab from catching a leg joint on a rough surface. Position coconut hides with the opening facing away from the most brightly lit area of the enclosure, as crabs instinctively seek darker recesses.

Ceramic aquarium caves and tunnels designed for shrimp and small fish are appropriately sized for Red Claw Crabs and available in a wide variety of shapes. Look for options with multiple openings, which prevent a crab from being cornered by a tankmate and allow for through-traffic that mimics the interconnected burrow systems crabs create in the wild. Glazed ceramic is easy to clean and does not alter water chemistry.

Stacked flat stones or slate pieces create natural-looking cave structures that double as climbing surfaces. The key to a safe stone hide is stability. Any structure that could collapse when a crab burrows underneath must be secured with aquarium-safe silicone or built on a stable base that rests directly on the tank bottom beneath the substrate. A falling rock can crack a crab's shell and cause injuries that are frequently fatal.

Safety & Escape Prevention

Escape prevention is arguably the single most important accessory category for Red Claw Crab keepers. These crabs are persistent and resourceful climbers that will find and exploit any opening in the enclosure. A tight-fitting lid is the primary line of defense, but it must be genuinely secure rather than simply resting on top of the tank. Glass lids with silicone bumpers, acrylic covers cut to fit precisely, or screen tops with weighted edges all work, provided there are no gaps larger than a few millimeters.

Cable and tubing pass-throughs are the most common vulnerability in an otherwise secure lid. Heater cords, filter intake tubes, and airline tubing all create small openings that a determined crab can squeeze through. Aquarium-safe foam inserts or silicone plugs shaped around these pass-throughs close the gaps without interfering with equipment function. Pre-cut foam strips designed for this purpose are widely available and can be trimmed to fit irregular openings.

Suction cup barriers placed along the inside of the tank rim create a secondary deterrent for crabs that reach the top edge. Smooth acrylic strips attached vertically just below the rim overhang make it difficult for claws to gain purchase on the final stretch to the lid gap. This approach is particularly useful for tanks with hinged feeding doors that cannot be fully sealed.

In the event of an escape, time is critical. Red Claw Crabs can survive outside water for extended periods if humidity is adequate, but in a dry home environment, their gills begin to desiccate within a few hours. Check behind and under furniture near the tank, as escaped crabs typically seek dark, enclosed spaces close to their enclosure. Keeping a damp towel draped near the tank during the first few weeks after setup gives an escaped crab a moisture refuge while you locate it.

Water Treatment & Salt Supplies

Marine-grade salt mix is the cornerstone of Red Claw Crab water preparation and should be considered a consumable accessory that is always in stock. Unlike freshwater aquarium salt or table salt, marine salt mixes contain the full spectrum of trace elements and minerals found in natural seawater, which are essential for crustacean health even at the lower concentrations of a brackish setup. Purchase in bulk quantities to reduce cost per water change and store in a sealed container to prevent moisture absorption.

A quality water conditioner that neutralizes chlorine, chloramine, and heavy metals is required for every water change. Municipal water treatment varies by region and season, and even well water may contain dissolved metals that are harmless to humans but toxic to invertebrates. Dose the conditioner into your mixing bucket before adding salt, as the conditioning process works best in fresh water before mineral concentrations are raised.

Buffering products designed to stabilize pH and alkalinity in marine or brackish systems can be useful for keepers whose tap water is naturally soft or acidic. These products prevent the gradual pH decline that occurs as biological filtration produces nitric acid over time. However, they should be used judiciously and only after testing confirms a buffering need, as over-supplementation can push pH above the optimal range and cause mineral precipitation.

Iodine supplements formulated for marine invertebrates support healthy molting and should be dosed at half the recommended marine concentration for a brackish paludarium. Iodine degrades quickly in water exposed to light and biological activity, so regular small doses are more effective than infrequent large additions. Store iodine supplements in a cool, dark location to preserve potency, and replace bottles that have been open for more than six months.
