Fiddler crabs are opportunistic omnivores that spend much of their time sifting through substrate for organic matter. In the wild they consume a mix of algae, detritus, microorganisms, and tiny invertebrates found in mud flats and mangrove shorelines. Replicating this diverse diet in captivity is the single most important factor in keeping them healthy and encouraging natural foraging behavior.
A well-rounded captive diet should include a balance of plant-based and protein-based foods. Fiddler crabs need calcium and iodine in particular to support regular molting cycles. Without adequate mineral intake, incomplete molts become a serious risk, and the crab may become trapped inside its old exoskeleton or develop soft, malformed shells.
Because fiddler crabs are small and produce relatively little waste per feeding, overfeeding is a more common problem than underfeeding. Uneaten food left on the land area or in the water quickly degrades water quality in the enclosed paludarium environment. Portion control and prompt removal of leftovers are essential habits that protect both water chemistry and the crabs themselves.
Keepers should also recognize that fiddler crabs are grazers rather than meal feeders. They prefer to pick at food throughout the day rather than consume a single large portion. Offering small amounts spread across the habitat encourages natural behavior and reduces food waste at the same time.
