A turkey baster is one of the most underrated tools in crab keeping. It allows precise spot-cleaning of debris from the sand surface, targeted removal of waste from hard-to-reach corners, and gentle water displacement during feeding. Testing weekly during stable periods and daily after any change to the setup is a sound practice.

Handling & Transport Supplies

Fiddler crabs should be handled as little as possible, but situations arise where moving a crab is unavoidable, such as during deep substrate changes, medical isolation, or when introducing new arrivals. A small, fine-mesh aquarium net is the safest tool for briefly relocating crabs. Choose a net with a soft mesh that will not snag on the crab's legs or claws, and scoop gently rather than chasing the crab around the enclosure.

A temporary holding container is essential during full tank cleanouts. A clean plastic tub with a secure lid, a few inches of damp sand, and a shallow dish of brackish water provides a safe short-term environment. The lid must have ventilation holes but should be secure enough to prevent escapes, because fiddler crabs are surprisingly adept at climbing smooth plastic walls when motivated.

For transporting crabs over longer distances, such as between a store and your home or when moving to a new residence, insulated containers help maintain stable temperatures during transit. A small cooler or insulated bag with damp paper towels and a piece of damp sponge provides moisture without submerging the crabs in water that could slosh and injure them. Crabs transported in sealed bags of water, as freshwater fish often are, risk suffocation because they need access to air.

Drip acclimation equipment is a worthwhile investment for anyone who plans to add new crabs to an existing colony. A length of airline tubing with an adjustable valve allows you to slowly introduce the new crabs to your enclosure's specific salinity and temperature over thirty to sixty minutes. This gradual transition dramatically reduces osmotic shock and gives new arrivals the best possible start in their new environment.

Backup & Emergency Supplies

Power outages, equipment failures, and sudden water quality emergencies are inevitable over the lifetime of any aquatic setup, and having backup supplies on hand can mean the difference between a minor inconvenience and a catastrophic loss. A battery-operated air pump with a sponge filter attachment keeps the water oxygenated and circulating during power outages that take down the main filtration system. These pumps are inexpensive and should be tested periodically to ensure the batteries are fresh.

A spare heater stored in a dry location provides immediate replacement if the primary heater fails. Heater failure in a cool room can drop water temperature rapidly, stressing crabs and potentially triggering emergency molting at a time when the animal is not physiologically prepared for it.
