Heater sizing follows a general rule of three to five watts per gallon of tank volume. A thirty-gallon Emerald Catfish tank typically needs a heater in the one-hundred to one-hundred-fifty watt range, depending on how far the ambient room temperature falls below the target water temperature. In particularly cold rooms or during winter months, keepers sometimes use two smaller heaters placed at opposite ends of the tank rather than a single large unit. Look for models specifically marketed as quiet or low-vibration, and place the pump on a soft pad or hang it from a hook rather than setting it directly on a hard shelf or cabinet. Equipping the quarantine tank requires only a few essential accessories. A small sponge filter provides gentle biological and mechanical filtration without the strong current produced by power filters. Pre-seeding the sponge in your main tank for a few weeks before you need it ensures it carries an established bacterial colony that can handle the bioload of a few quarantined fish immediately.
