The male presents his ventral surface perpendicular to the female's head, the female clasps his pelvic fins and receives milt, then deposits a small cluster of adhesive eggs on a cleaned surface while fertilizing them with the stored sperm. Emerald Catfish typically deposit eggs on the aquarium glass, broad plant leaves, or smooth hardscape surfaces. Clutch sizes of 100 to 300 or more eggs are possible from well-conditioned females. Eggs hatch in approximately four to five days at tropical temperatures, and the tiny fry require infusoria or liquid fry food before graduating to freshly hatched brine shrimp within the first week.
