Quarantine & Hospital Tanks

A quarantine tank is one of the most overlooked but valuable pieces of equipment in a marine hobbyist's arsenal. Every new fish, including clownfish, should be quarantined for a minimum of two to four weeks before being introduced to the main display tank. This isolation period allows you to observe the fish for signs of disease, parasites, or stress without risking the health of established tank inhabitants. A simple 10- to 15-gallon tank with a sponge filter, heater, and a few pieces of PVC pipe for hiding spots is all that is needed.

The quarantine tank also doubles as a hospital tank when an established fish becomes ill. Treating diseases in a dedicated tank is far more effective and less disruptive than medicating the entire display system. When setting up a quarantine tank, avoid using substrate or complex decorations that can trap medications and make the tank difficult to sterilize between uses. Bare-bottom tanks are ideal because they are easy to clean and allow you to monitor the fish's waste output closely. Keep the lighting subdued to reduce stress, and maintain the same temperature and salinity as the display tank to minimize the shock of transfer.

Investing in a quarantine setup may seem excessive for a single pair of clownfish, but it pays for itself the first time it prevents a disease outbreak in your display tank. Multi-Species & Community Considerations

Peaceful, non-territorial species that occupy different areas of the tank, such as dartfish, cardinalfish, and small gobies, tend to coexist well with clownfish. When keeping clownfish with an anemone, be aware that anemones have their own space and compatibility requirements.
