While Bettas were historically kept in tiny bowls and vases — a practice rooted in misconceptions about their natural habitat — modern fishkeeping standards strongly advocate for a minimum of five gallons. A five-gallon tank provides enough water volume to maintain stable temperature and chemistry, gives the fish room to swim and explore, and makes routine maintenance far more manageable.

Larger tanks in the 10 to 20 gallon range offer even greater stability and open up options for live plants, more elaborate aquascaping, and potentially compatible tank mates. Water parameters fluctuate less in larger volumes, meaning temperature swings, ammonia spikes, and pH shifts are buffered more effectively. For keepers who want a low-maintenance setup that forgives occasional lapses in water changes, a larger tank is almost always the better investment.

Tank shape matters as well. Bettas are labyrinth fish that breathe atmospheric air from the surface, so they need easy access to the top of the tank. Lighting & Tank Placement

Lighting in a Betta tank serves primarily to showcase the fish's coloration and support live plant growth if present. Bettas do not have specialized lighting needs, but they do benefit from a consistent day-night cycle that mimics natural conditions. Eight to ten hours of light per day followed by complete darkness at night supports healthy circadian rhythms and reduces stress. A simple timer on the tank light eliminates the guesswork and prevents accidental overexposure.

Tank Mates & Divided Setups

Bettas are famously territorial, and the question of tank mates requires careful consideration. Male Bettas should never be housed together — they will fight, often to the death. Female Bettas can sometimes coexist in groups called sororities, but these setups require tanks of 20 gallons or larger with dense planting and multiple line-of-sight breaks, and even then aggression can be unpredictable. Sorority tanks are not recommended for beginners.

Certain peaceful, small species can coexist with a Betta in a sufficiently large tank.
