Amano Shrimp are generally large enough to avoid predation by adult Bettas, though smaller shrimp species including Cherry Shrimp and Crystal Red Shrimp may be hunted. Success with shrimp depends heavily on individual Betta temperament and the availability of dense plant cover that provides shrimp with refuge from an inquisitive or predatory fish.

Breeding Betta splendens is a deliberate process requiring preparation, dedicated equipment, and a commitment to raising potentially hundreds of fry. A separate breeding tank of ten gallons with shallow water depth of four to six inches, gentle filtration, floating plants, and a removable divider allows controlled introduction of conditioned breeding pairs. The male constructs a bubble nest, and upon successful courtship involving elaborate displays and the female presenting vertical barring indicating receptivity, the pair engages in a spawning embrace beneath the nest where eggs are fertilized and collected by the male for placement in the bubble nest. The female must be removed immediately after spawning, as the male assumes sole parental responsibility and may attack the female to protect the nest. Fry hatch within 24 to 48 hours and become free-swimming approximately three days later, at which point they require infusoria or commercially prepared liquid fry food before graduating to baby brine shrimp as they grow.
