Shrimp that have thoroughly grazed every surface in a static layout will show visibly increased activity levels when the environment changes, even if the same objects are simply moved to new locations.

Introducing new items on a rotating basis keeps the tank environment dynamic. Adding a new piece of driftwood, a handful of dried leaves, or a few river stones every couple of weeks gives shrimp something genuinely new to investigate. Removing items that have been fully grazed and stripped of biofilm and replacing them with fresh alternatives maintains a steady supply of foraging opportunities.

Adjusting the filter output direction or adding a small air stone in a new location alters the current patterns within the tank, which changes where food particles settle and how biofilm develops on surfaces. These materials are inexpensive, easy to cut to any shape, and develop biofilm within days of being submerged.
