Water testing supplies are the single most important accessory for any Amano Shrimp keeper. These invertebrates are far more sensitive to water chemistry imbalances than most freshwater fish, and problems that a hardy fish might tolerate can be rapidly fatal to shrimp. A reliable test kit that measures ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, GH, and KH provides the foundational data needed to maintain a safe environment.

Liquid reagent test kits are generally preferred over test strips for shrimp keeping because they offer greater accuracy and consistency. While test strips are convenient for quick checks, their readings can be imprecise at the lower ranges where shrimp safety margins are tightest. The difference between zero ammonia and a trace amount matters enormously for invertebrates, and liquid tests resolve that distinction more reliably.

GH and KH testing deserves special attention because these parameters directly affect molting success. Amano Shrimp require adequate general hardness for the calcium and magnesium that build their exoskeletons, and sufficient carbonate hardness to maintain stable pH. A GH between 6 and 8 dGH and a KH between 2 and 5 dKH represents the target range for most keepers. Testing these parameters weekly allows for proactive adjustments before problems develop.

TDS meters, which measure total dissolved solids in parts per million, have become a staple tool among shrimp keepers. While TDS does not identify specific substances in the water, it provides a quick snapshot of overall mineral content and is particularly useful for monitoring the consistency of remineralized water between water changes. A sudden shift in TDS can alert a keeper to problems before they become visible in shrimp behavior.

Water Treatment & Conditioning

Water conditioners that neutralize chlorine and chloramine are absolutely essential for shrimp keeping. Tap water treated with these disinfectants is lethal to Amano Shrimp even in small amounts. Every water change, top-off, or new water addition must be treated with a dechlorinator before it enters the tank. Products that also detoxify heavy metals provide an additional layer of protection that is especially valuable in areas with older plumbing.

Remineralizing products designed for shrimp allow keepers who use reverse osmosis or distilled water to build their water chemistry from scratch. Starting with pure water and adding minerals to a target GH and TDS gives complete control over water parameters, eliminating the variability and potential contaminants present in untreated tap water. While this approach requires more effort, many experienced shrimp keepers consider it the most reliable way to maintain optimal conditions.

Beneficial bacteria supplements can accelerate the establishment of biological filtration in new tanks and help restore bacterial populations after medication use or filter cleaning. While these products are not strictly necessary in a well-established tank, they provide a useful safety net during the critical cycling period and can reduce the time new shrimp spend in suboptimal water conditions.

Products that buffer pH to a specific range can be helpful in tanks where natural pH tends to drift. However, these should be used with caution in shrimp tanks because sudden pH changes are more dangerous than a slightly suboptimal but stable pH. Gradual adjustments achieved through substrate choice, water source management, and botanical additions are generally safer than chemical buffers that can create swings if dosing is inconsistent.

Feeding Accessories

Feeding dishes and trays designed for aquarium use keep food contained in a specific area of the tank, which offers several advantages for shrimp keeping. Concentrated food placement makes it easier to monitor how much the colony is eating, simplifies removal of uneaten portions, and prevents food from scattering into hard-to-reach areas of the substrate where it would decompose and compromise water quality.

Feeding tubes allow keepers to deliver food directly to the substrate without disturbing the water surface or spooking shrimp. These are especially useful in tanks with strong surface agitation from filters or air stones that would scatter powdered or fine-grained foods before they can sink. A feeding tube also lets you target specific areas of the tank, which is helpful when trying to ensure that food reaches shrimp in a particular zone rather than being monopolized by faster tankmates.

Long-handled feeding tongs and tweezers are indispensable for placing and retrieving food items like blanched vegetables, mineral blocks, or leaf litter. Reaching into the tank by hand not only risks contaminating the water with oils, soaps, or lotions from skin but also creates enough disturbance to send shrimp into hiding for extended periods. Stainless steel aquascaping tweezers work well for this purpose and double as plant maintenance tools.

Vegetable clips that suction to the glass are another practical feeding accessory. They hold blanched zucchini, spinach, or other fresh foods in place so shrimp can graze at their own pace without the food drifting around the tank. Clips also keep vegetables off the substrate, which can slow decomposition and give keepers a longer window before removal becomes necessary.

Maintenance Tools

A gravel vacuum or siphon designed for small tanks is essential for routine substrate cleaning. Standard siphons designed for larger aquariums create too much suction for shrimp tanks and risk pulling up substrate, plants, and even the shrimp themselves. Nano-sized siphons with smaller diameter tubing and gentler suction provide the control needed to clean the substrate without disrupting the tank environment or endangering its inhabitants.

Algae scrapers and magnetic glass cleaners keep viewing panels clear without requiring the keeper to put hands or tools deep into the water. For shrimp tanks, smaller magnetic cleaners designed for nano aquariums are preferable because they are proportionate to the tank size and less likely to trap or crush a shrimp against the glass. Always check that no shrimp are resting on the glass in the path of the cleaner before using it.

Buckets and containers dedicated exclusively to aquarium use prevent cross-contamination from household cleaning products. Even trace residues of soap, bleach, or other chemicals left in a bucket from non-aquarium use can be catastrophic in a shrimp tank. Labeling aquarium-only containers and storing them separately from household supplies is a simple precaution that prevents one of the most common accidental causes of shrimp loss.

A quality aquarium-safe thermometer, whether digital or analog, should be checked against a known-accurate reference at least once. Inaccurate thermometers can lead keepers to believe water temperature is within range when it is actually too high or too low. Digital thermometers with probes placed directly in the water tend to be more accurate than adhesive strip thermometers attached to the outside of the glass, which measure the glass temperature rather than the water itself.

Acclimation & Transport Supplies

Drip acclimation equipment is critically important for Amano Shrimp because they are highly sensitive to sudden changes in water chemistry. The drip acclimation method involves slowly introducing tank water into the container holding newly purchased shrimp over a period of one to two hours, allowing them to adjust gradually. Airline tubing with an adjustable valve or a purpose-built drip acclimation kit makes this process straightforward and controllable.

Insulated transport bags or containers help maintain stable temperatures during the journey from store to home. Temperature fluctuations during transport add stress on top of the chemical differences between store water and home tank water. In cold weather especially, an insulated bag or a small cooler with a heat pack can mean the difference between shrimp arriving stressed but viable and arriving in critical condition.

Breeder boxes and specimen containers serve multiple purposes beyond transport. They function as temporary isolation enclosures for new arrivals during quarantine observation, as safe spaces for shrimp recovering from injury or difficult molts, and as containers for separating berried females if larval collection is being attempted. A fine-mesh breeder box that allows water circulation while preventing escape is a versatile accessory that most serious shrimp keepers use regularly.

Nets designed for shrimp and small invertebrates have finer mesh than standard fish nets, which prevents shrimp legs and antennae from becoming tangled. Shrimp injured during netting can lose limbs or become fatally stressed. Using a fine-mesh net and moving slowly, or better yet, coaxing shrimp into a submerged container rather than netting them at all, minimizes handling trauma.

Safety & Tank Security

Tank lids and covers are a non-negotiable accessory for Amano Shrimp. These shrimp are among the most escape-prone inhabitants in the freshwater hobby, capable of climbing filter tubes, airline tubing, heater cords, and even the silicone seams in the corners of the tank. A tight-fitting lid with minimal gaps prevents the heartbreaking discovery of a dried-out shrimp on the floor, which is an experience nearly every Amano Shrimp keeper has encountered at least once.

Intake guards and sponge pre-filters protect shrimp from being pulled into filter mechanisms. While adult Amano Shrimp are generally large enough to avoid most filter intakes, juveniles and freshly molted individuals with soft exoskeletons are more vulnerable. Stainless steel intake covers or fine sponge sleeves fitted over the intake tube provide reliable protection without significantly reducing filter flow.

Copper test kits should be part of every shrimp keeper's accessory collection. Copper is toxic to invertebrates at concentrations that are harmless to fish, and it can enter a tank through contaminated water sources, improperly rinsed decorations, or medications used to treat fish diseases. Testing for copper before adding new water or after any change in the water source protects against this invisible threat.

Check valves installed on airline tubing prevent back-siphoning if an air pump fails or loses power. Without a check valve, water can flow backward through the airline tubing and potentially drain a significant portion of the tank or damage the air pump. This simple and inexpensive device should be installed on every airline running into the tank, positioned above the waterline for maximum effectiveness. Power outage preparedness, including battery-operated air pumps and insulating blankets for the tank, rounds out a comprehensive safety plan for valuable shrimp colonies.
