Dorper sheep are a meat breed originally developed in South Africa by crossing Dorset Horn and Blackhead Persian sheep. Their nutritional requirements reflect their muscular build and relatively fast growth rate. A mature Dorper ewe in good condition requires roughly two to three percent of her body weight in dry matter each day, with protein levels between ten and fourteen percent depending on her stage of production. Rams at maintenance need slightly less protein but still benefit from consistent energy intake to maintain body condition throughout the breeding season.
Because Dorpers are known for their hardiness and ability to thrive on marginal forage, they are sometimes underfed on the assumption that they can fend for themselves. While they do browse more readily than many wool breeds and tolerate sparse pasture better than most, they still require balanced nutrition to reach their genetic potential. Deficiencies in energy, protein, or key minerals will show up as poor lamb growth rates, reduced fertility, and weakened immune response.
Lactating ewes have the highest nutritional demands in the flock. During peak lactation, a Dorper ewe nursing twins may need feed with fourteen to sixteen percent crude protein and significantly more energy than she consumed during late gestation. Failing to meet these demands leads to rapid body condition loss, which can delay the ewe's return to breeding readiness and compromise lamb survival.
Growing lambs destined for market benefit from creep feeding arrangements that allow them access to higher-protein rations before weaning. A well-designed creep feed program supports consistent daily gains without placing additional nutritional stress on the ewe. Lambs that receive supplemental nutrition during the nursing period typically reach market weight faster and with more uniform finish.
