Basic shelter should provide protection from extreme weather, wind, and precipitation rather than maintaining specific temperatures. A three-sided shed or simple pole barn offering 12-15 square feet per animal suffices in most climates. In extremely harsh northern areas, enclosed barns with good ventilation prevent frostbite and provide lambing space, while southern operations may need only shade structures and windbreaks. The key is adequate ventilation to prevent respiratory issues while protecting animals from direct sun, driving rain, and severe cold.
Fencing requirements depend on management style and local predator pressure. Dorpers respect boundaries well and rarely challenge fences if provided adequate forage and water. Woven wire fencing 4-5 feet tall effectively contains adults, while lambs require tighter spacing at ground level to prevent escapes. Electric fencing, particularly multi-strand systems with offset electrified wires, provides economical containment for rotational grazing operations. Barbed wire alone is inadequate, as it provides little predator protection and can cause injuries. High-tensile woven wire or electric netting works well for temporary paddocks and intensive grazing systems.
Predator protection is absolutely critical for Dorper sheep operations. Despite their size, sheep face threats from coyotes, domestic dogs, mountain lions, bears, bobcats, and even large birds of prey attacking lambs. Secure night housing in predator-proof barns or shelters prevents most losses in high-pressure areas. Hardware cloth or heavy-gauge welded wire on lower portions of structures prevents digging predators from gaining access. Many successful operations use livestock guardian animals (dogs, llamas, or donkeys) to protect pastured flocks, especially during lambing season when predation risk peaks.
Fencing must extend below ground level or include buried aprons to prevent digging predators from tunneling under barriers. Electric fencing provides deterrence but should not be the sole protection in high-risk areas. Regular perimeter checks, prompt removal of carcasses, and secure feed storage all reduce predator attraction. Consider livestock guardian animals for larger operations or areas with significant predator pressure. Multiple dogs working together provide superior protection compared to single guardians in challenging environments.
Pasture management significantly impacts Dorper health and productivity. Rotational grazing systems maximize forage utilization while breaking parasite life cycles. Allow pastures to rest 30-45 days between grazing periods when possible, as this interrupts internal parasite transmission. Dorpers tolerate closer grazing than many breeds but benefit from being moved before pastures are grazed below 3-4 inches. Mixed-species grazing with cattle or goats can improve parasite control and pasture utilization, as different species target different forage types and harbor different parasite species.
Water sources must provide clean, fresh water accessible at all times. Automatic waterers reduce labor but require heating in freezing climates. Stock tanks work well but need regular cleaning to prevent algae growth and contamination. Plan for 1-2 gallons per animal daily, with increased consumption during lactation and hot weather. Locate water sources to encourage even pasture utilization rather than concentrating animals in single areas. Adequate water is critical for milk production, lamb growth, and overall flock health, yet remains one of the most commonly overlooked aspects of sheep management.
