Berkshire pigs are a medium-to-large heritage breed prized for their exceptional marbling and meat quality. Their nutritional requirements reflect a metabolism that naturally deposits intramuscular fat, which means their diet must be carefully balanced to support healthy growth without encouraging excessive external fat deposition. A well-formulated ration for Berkshires generally targets 14–16 percent crude protein for growing pigs and 12–14 percent for mature animals, with energy levels adjusted according to the pig's life stage and purpose.
Unlike commercial breeds selected for rapid lean gain, Berkshires thrive on a moderate growth trajectory. Pushing them with high-energy finishing rations too early can compromise the very marbling characteristics that make the breed valuable. Their feed conversion ratio is somewhat lower than modern commercial lines, meaning they require more feed per pound of gain, but the resulting meat quality typically justifies the investment for heritage breeders and small-farm operators.
Mineral and vitamin supplementation plays a critical role in Berkshire pig health. Calcium and phosphorus must be provided in a roughly two-to-one ratio to support skeletal development, particularly during the rapid growth phase from weaning through six months. Selenium, often deficient in many regional soils, should be supplemented to prevent white muscle disease. Salt, zinc, and iron round out the essential mineral profile, and most commercial swine premixes are formulated to cover these needs when mixed at the recommended inclusion rate.
Water quality and availability are frequently overlooked but absolutely essential. A mature Berkshire can consume 10–15 liters of water per day, and lactating sows may drink twice that amount. Fresh, clean water supports digestion, thermoregulation, and overall metabolic function. Automatic waterers or nipple drinkers should be checked daily to ensure adequate flow rates and to prevent biofilm buildup that can harbor harmful bacteria.
