Rumination monitoring is particularly valuable in ruminant animals like goats. A healthy Pygmy Goat spends six to eight hours per day chewing cud, and a significant drop in rumination time is one of the earliest indicators of digestive disturbance, pain, or systemic illness. Devices that track rumination use motion sensors or acoustic sensors to detect the rhythmic jaw movements associated with cud chewing and flag deviations from the individual animal's baseline pattern.
Temperature monitoring through ear-tag-based sensors provides continuous tracking without the stress of repeated rectal temperature checks. The practical challenge with wearable monitors for Pygmy Goats is durability and retention. Pygmy Goats are rough on equipment, and any device attached to an animal will be subjected to rubbing, climbing, headbutting, and exposure to weather and mud.
