Fruit can be offered in moderation as a treat or training reward. Apples, pears, watermelon, and berries are all safe and popular with most goats. Baking soda is a traditional free-choice supplement in many goat operations. It acts as a rumen buffer and can help goats self-regulate their digestive pH, particularly when they are consuming grain or other concentrates that can acidify the rumen. While some nutritionists debate its necessity in a well-managed feeding program, most small-herd owners find it inexpensive and harmless to offer alongside loose minerals.

Probiotics and digestive supplements can be valuable during periods of stress or dietary transition. Kid-rearing season, weaning, transport, illness recovery, and any abrupt feed change are all situations where a probiotic paste or powder can support rumen health. Some goat keepers also provide apple cider vinegar in the water as a general tonic, though scientific evidence for its benefits in ruminants is limited.

Treats for training and handling purposes should be small, low-sugar, and easy to carry. Many goat owners use small pieces of dried fruit, animal crackers, or commercial goat treats. Whatever you choose, consistency matters more than the specific treat—LaManchas are intelligent and respond quickly to positive reinforcement. Foods to Avoid

Certain plants and foods are toxic to goats and must be kept out of reach at all times. Rhododendron and azalea are among the most dangerous—even small quantities can cause fatal poisoning. Wild cherry leaves, especially when wilted, release cyanide compounds that are rapidly lethal. Yew, oleander, and mountain laurel are similarly dangerous. Chocolate and caffeine are toxic. Dairy products are inappropriate for adult ruminants, and anything containing artificial sweeteners, particularly xylitol, can be fatal. Excess grain is one of the most common and preventable causes of illness in goats. Grain overload, also called acidosis or lactic acidosis, occurs when a goat consumes more concentrate feed than the rumen can process.
