LaMancha goats are a productive dairy breed, and their nutritional demands reflect that output. A lactating LaMancha doe can produce well over a gallon of milk per day during peak production, which places significant caloric and mineral demands on her body. Protein, calcium, and phosphorus are the cornerstones of a sound feeding program, and getting the ratios right matters as much as the total quantities. A diet that falls short on any one of these will show up quickly in declining milk volume, poor coat condition, or reproductive difficulties.
Outside of lactation, LaManchas are relatively easy keepers. Dry does, wethers, and bucks in the off-season can maintain good body condition on quality forage alone, supplemented with a loose mineral mix formulated for goats. However, the transition periods—late gestation and early lactation—demand careful nutritional planning. Energy requirements can nearly double in the final weeks of pregnancy, especially when a doe is carrying multiples, which LaManchas frequently do.
It is important to understand that goats are browsers, not grazers. Their digestive systems are optimized for a varied diet of brush, leaves, bark, and coarse stemmy plants rather than the lush pasture grasses that cattle prefer. A LaMancha given access to diverse browse will often self-select a remarkably balanced diet, but most managed herds need supplemental feed to meet production goals. Balancing forage quality with concentrates is the central challenge of goat nutrition.
Micronutrients deserve attention as well. Copper, selenium, and zinc are frequently deficient in goat diets depending on regional soil composition. Unlike sheep, goats require copper and are quite sensitive to deficiency, which can manifest as faded coat color, poor immune function, and fertility problems. A goat-specific loose mineral supplement is essential and should be available free-choice at all times.
