Chain collars should be avoided entirely for goats. They are heavy, can cause neck injuries, and do not release under pressure. LaManchas have short to medium-length coats that require less grooming than long-haired breeds but still benefit from regular attention. A firm-bristled brush or rubber curry comb used several times a week removes loose hair, distributes skin oils, and gives you an opportunity to inspect the skin for parasites, wounds, or developing health issues. Grooming sessions also strengthen the bond between handler and goat, which pays off in calmer behavior during milking, hoof trimming, and veterinary procedures.

Hoof care tools are the most critical grooming investment for any goat owner. Every goat requires hoof trimming on a schedule that ranges from every four to eight weeks depending on terrain, activity level, and individual growth rate. For LaManchas, however, tagging presents a unique challenge—their characteristically tiny ears, classified as either gopher ears or elf ears, leave very little tissue to attach a standard livestock ear tag. The drawback is that identification requires a scanner—you cannot visually identify a microchipped animal at a glance the way you can with a collar tag or ear tag.

Record-keeping systems range from simple notebook logs to sophisticated herd management software. At minimum, you should maintain records of each animal's identification number, date of birth, parentage, vaccination history, deworming schedule, hoof trimming dates, breeding dates, kidding history, and milk production data. For dairy operations, daily or weekly milk weights tracked by individual doe are invaluable for identifying declining production that may signal health problems, evaluating genetic merit for breeding decisions, and managing feed rations efficiently.

Color-coded collars, leg bands, and marking crayons provide at-a-glance visual identification that complements permanent ID methods. Assigning each goat a collar color makes it easy to identify individuals from a distance, which speeds up daily management tasks like sorting, catching, and monitoring. Some goat keepers use a numbering system on collars that corresponds to their record-keeping database, creating a seamless link between the goat in the field and her data in the office.

Seasonal & Weather Gear

While LaManchas are generally hardy animals that do not require clothing or blankets under normal conditions, specific situations warrant seasonal gear. Newborn kids born in cold weather are vulnerable to hypothermia in their first hours of life, and kid coats or sweaters can be lifesaving for kids born during cold snaps, particularly those that are small, weak, or slow to nurse. A supply of kid-sized coats should be on hand before kidding season begins, along with clean towels for drying kids immediately after birth.

Fly control gear becomes essential during warm-weather months. Flies are more than a nuisance for goats—they cause stress, reduce grazing time, and can transmit diseases. Fly masks designed for goats protect the face and eyes, though many goats resist wearing them and will rub them off. Fly sprays and pour-on repellents formulated for livestock provide temporary relief, and fly traps and bait stations positioned around the barn and paddock reduce the overall fly population. Integrated pest management that combines physical, chemical, and biological fly control methods is far more effective than relying on any single approach.

Rain gear is not typically worn by goats, but rain management infrastructure is critical. Covered feeding areas, sheltered loafing spaces, and well-drained paddock surfaces keep goats dry and willing to move about in wet weather. Without these provisions, many goats will refuse to leave their shelter during rain, reducing their exercise, browse intake, and overall well-being. Permanent shade structures or portable shade canopies serve a similar function in hot weather, protecting goats from direct sun during the hottest parts of the day.

First aid and emergency supplies should be stocked seasonally and checked regularly. A basic goat first aid kit includes a digital thermometer, syringes and needles in several sizes, wound care supplies, electrolyte powder, bloat treatment, hoof care supplies, and a kidding kit with obstetric supplies. Keep these materials organized in a clearly labeled container in the barn, accessible but protected from moisture and temperature extremes. Knowing what you have on hand and where to find it at two in the morning during a difficult kidding is worth every minute spent organizing.
