Khaki Campbell ducks are an active, foraging-oriented breed that requires more space than their relatively modest body size might suggest. As a general rule, each duck needs a minimum of four to six square feet of interior shelter space and at least fifteen to twenty-five square feet of outdoor run or yard space. If free-ranging is not an option due to predator pressure or property constraints, a well-designed enclosed run with overhead netting can provide safety while still allowing ample room to roam.

Sleeping arrangements for Khaki Campbells are straightforward because ducks sleep on the ground rather than on roosts. A clean, dry floor with adequate bedding is all they require. Ducks tend to cluster together at night, so the sleeping area does not need to be divided into individual spaces. However, it should be large enough that the entire flock can settle comfortably without being forced to crowd into corners.

Placement of nesting areas within the shelter matters. Ducks prefer to lay eggs in dim, sheltered spots, so positioning nesting boxes along the back wall or in a corner away from the main doorway encourages consistent use. Water Features & Access

Water is central to every aspect of a Khaki Campbell's life, and housing design should account for the inevitable mess that comes with keeping waterfowl. While a full pond or lake is not necessary, ducks do need water deep enough to submerge their heads and bills to clean their eyes and nares. A simple trough, tub, or purpose-built duck waterer that allows full bill submersion is the minimum requirement. Many keepers provide a small kiddie pool or stock tank for bathing and swimming, which supports feather health and provides significant enrichment.

Drainage is one of the most challenging aspects of duck housing design. Ducks will splash, spill, and play in any water source, turning the surrounding area into mud within days if drainage is not managed. Placing water features on a gravel pad, a concrete slab with a slight grade, or over a French drain system helps channel excess water away from the main living and sleeping areas. The water station should be positioned as far from the shelter entrance as the run allows to keep bedding dry.

Water containers come in a wide range of styles suitable for duck flocks. Nipple waterers designed for poultry are generally not appropriate for ducks because they do not allow bill submersion. Cleanliness of the water supply requires daily attention. Ducks will muddy their drinking water within hours, and standing dirty water becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and parasites. Climate Considerations

Khaki Campbell ducks are a hardy breed that tolerates a wide range of climates, but housing should be adapted to the specific conditions of the keeper's region. In cold climates, the primary concern is not temperature itself — ducks are remarkably cold-tolerant thanks to their dense feather insulation and a counter-current heat exchange system in their legs — but rather moisture and drafts. A dry, draft-free shelter with deep bedding is far more important than a heated one. Most experienced keepers advise against heating duck shelters because heat sources create fire hazards in bedding-filled enclosures and can actually weaken ducks' natural cold tolerance.

In hot climates, heat stress is the greater danger. Ducks dissipate heat through their feet and by panting, and they can overheat quickly in temperatures above ninety degrees Fahrenheit, especially in humid conditions. Shade is essential in warm regions, both in the run and around any water features. The shelter itself should be positioned to take advantage of natural shade from trees or structures, and additional shade cloth or tarps may be needed over portions of the outdoor run during the hottest months.

Ventilation adjustments between seasons help maintain a healthy environment inside the shelter. In summer, maximum airflow is the goal — opening windows, adding ventilation panels, or removing solid door sections in favor of hardware cloth screens keeps air moving and temperatures down. In winter, some ventilation should remain open to prevent moisture buildup, but the shelter should be protected from prevailing winds. Adjustable vents or removable panels allow keepers to fine-tune airflow throughout the year.

Precipitation management extends beyond the shelter itself to the entire duck yard. In regions with heavy rainfall, the run can become a swamp without proper grading, drainage, and ground cover. Pea gravel, sand, or wood chips over a well-graded base help maintain a surface that dries quickly. Some keepers build covered runs or attach roofed porches to the main shelter so that ducks have a dry outdoor space even during extended rainy periods.

Predator Protection & Multi-Flock Setups

Predator protection is non-negotiable when housing Khaki Campbell ducks. Ducks are among the most vulnerable of all domestic poultry because they cannot fly to escape danger and they lack the sharp spurs or aggressive temperament that some other birds use for self-defense. Common predators include raccoons, foxes, coyotes, weasels, mink, hawks, owls, and domestic dogs. Every opening in the shelter and run must be secured against these threats.

Hardware cloth with a half-inch mesh is the standard material for covering windows, ventilation openings, and run walls. Standard chicken wire is not sufficient — raccoons can reach through the larger openings, and weasels or mink can squeeze through them entirely. All hardware cloth should be secured with screws and washers rather than staples, which predators can pull loose. Doors should close securely with latches that require two motions to open, as raccoons can manipulate simple hook-and-eye or slide-bolt latches.

The run perimeter requires attention both above and below ground. Aerial predators are a significant threat, and a covered run with hardware cloth or heavy-duty bird netting across the top is the most reliable protection. Along the ground, a predator apron of hardware cloth extending twelve to eighteen inches outward from the base of the fence and buried a few inches below the soil surface prevents digging predators from tunneling in. Alternatively, the fence can be buried twelve to eighteen inches straight down, though the apron method is generally easier to install.

For keepers maintaining multiple flocks or mixed species on the same property, separate but adjacent housing areas work well. Khaki Campbells generally coexist peacefully with other duck breeds and even chickens, but their water habits can create problems in a shared coop because they will soak the bedding that chickens need to keep dry. Housing ducks in their own shelter with a shared daytime run is a common compromise. If ducks and chickens share an outdoor space, the water features should be positioned in the duck-designated area where chickens are less likely to encounter the resulting mud.
