Khaki Campbell ducks are among the most prolific egg-laying breeds in the domestic duck world, and their nutritional demands reflect that extraordinary output. A hen producing upwards of three hundred eggs per year requires a carefully balanced diet rich in protein, calcium, and essential vitamins to sustain both her laying cycle and her overall health. Unlike chickens, ducks have slightly different metabolic requirements, and feeding them a diet formulated exclusively for chickens can lead to deficiencies over time.
Protein is the single most important macronutrient for Khaki Campbells during their laying period. Laying hens generally need feed with sixteen to eighteen percent protein content, while ducklings require a higher concentration of around twenty percent during their first few weeks of life. During the molt or the off-season when egg production naturally slows, protein requirements decrease somewhat, and a maintenance ration of around fourteen to fifteen percent protein is adequate.
Calcium plays a critical role in eggshell formation, and Khaki Campbells that do not receive enough calcium will produce thin-shelled or soft-shelled eggs. Laying hens need access to supplemental calcium in the form of crushed oyster shell or limestone grit, offered free-choice so each bird can regulate her own intake. Niacin is another nutrient that ducks need in higher quantities than chickens. A niacin deficiency can cause leg problems and neurological issues, particularly in growing ducklings, so ensuring the feed contains adequate niacin or supplementing with brewer's yeast is essential.
Fresh, clean water is inseparable from a Khaki Campbell's nutrition. Ducks need water to eat — they use it to wash down each mouthful of feed and to clear their nares. Without constant access to water during feeding, ducks can choke on dry pellets or crumbles. The water source should be deep enough for the duck to submerge its entire bill but does not need to be a full swimming pool for nutritional purposes alone.
