Huacaya Alpacas are modified ruminants with a three-compartment stomach system that ferments forage efficiently, meaning their dietary needs differ substantially from horses, cattle, or sheep. They evolved on sparse Andean pastures and are remarkably efficient converters of low-quality forage, so overfeeding is a more common management error than underfeeding. A mature Huacaya typically consumes roughly 1.5 to 2 percent of its body weight per day in dry matter, with the bulk of that intake coming from hay or pasture grass.
Protein requirements shift with life stage. Maintenance adults do well on forage providing 10 to 12 percent crude protein, while lactating dams, growing crias, and breeding males in work may need 14 to 16 percent. Excessive protein strains the kidneys and can contribute to heat stress, so matching feed to the animal's actual stage of production is critical. Energy balance matters just as much — alpacas that become overweight are prone to fatty liver disease and difficult births.
Minerals and trace elements round out the nutritional picture. Alpacas need adequate calcium, phosphorus, selenium, zinc, and copper, but their tolerance for copper is substantially lower than that of horses or goats. Any mineral program must account for regional soil conditions, because pasture mineral content varies widely. A veterinarian-recommended blood panel once or twice a year is the most reliable way to fine-tune supplementation.
