When selecting a pellet, choose products designed for llamas and alpacas rather than adapting feeds made for other livestock. Camelid-specific formulations manage copper content carefully and balance the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio appropriately. Pellet size matters too — alpacas have small mouths and prefer smaller pellets or crumbles that are easy to pick up and chew. Look for supplements that list selenium, zinc, and vitamin E prominently, as deficiencies in these nutrients are common depending on geographic region.

Selenium status deserves particular attention. Much of North America has selenium-deficient soils, and alpacas grazing or eating hay from these regions may develop white muscle disease, poor fertility, or weakened immune function. Your veterinarian can recommend injectable or oral selenium supplementation based on blood work results. Conversely, parts of the western United States have selenium-toxic soils, making over-supplementation a real concern in those areas.

Vitamin D supplementation may be necessary for alpacas in northern latitudes or those housed indoors for extended periods. Unlike some livestock, alpacas cannot synthesize adequate vitamin D through their dense fleece, and deficiency can lead to rickets in crias and bone weakness in adults. Probiotics and digestive supplements are generally unnecessary for healthy alpacas with access to good forage, but they can support recovery after antibiotic treatment or during transitions between feed sources.

Salt should be offered separately from the mineral mix, either as a plain white salt block or as loose salt in a weatherproof feeder. Alpacas require sodium for fluid balance and will consume it as needed. Trace-mineralized salt blocks are not a substitute for a complete camelid mineral, as they do not provide balanced nutrition and may introduce unwanted copper.

Foods to Avoid

Several common plants and feed ingredients are dangerous for alpacas. Rhododendron, azalea, oleander, yew, and mountain laurel are all highly toxic and can be fatal even in small amounts. Walk your pastures and fence lines regularly to identify and remove toxic plants, and be especially vigilant after storms that may blow branches or debris into grazing areas. Fruit and vegetable scraps, while tempting to offer as treats, should be given sparingly if at all. Onions, garlic, potatoes, and avocado are specifically toxic. If you use treats for training or handling, stick to small amounts of safe, low-sugar options like a few pieces of carrot or a plain hay cube.

Grain overload is one of the most dangerous nutritional emergencies in alpacas. If an animal gains access to an unsecured feed bin and consumes a large quantity of grain, the rapid fermentation of starch produces a surge of lactic acid that can cause fatal acidosis within hours. Keep all grain stored securely in animal-proof containers with latching lids, and never leave feed bags unattended in areas where alpacas can reach them.

Moldy hay and silage are serious hazards. Listeriosis, aspergillosis, and other fungal infections can result from contaminated feed. Alpacas are particularly susceptible to listeriosis, which causes neurological symptoms and is often fatal by the time signs appear. Discard any hay that smells musty or shows visible mold, and clean feeders regularly to remove damp remnants that could harbor fungal growth.

Feeding Schedule

Alpacas are natural grazers that do best with consistent access to forage throughout the day. A twice-daily hay feeding schedule — morning and evening — works well for most operations, supplemented by pasture access during the growing season. This rhythm mimics natural grazing behavior and supports steady foregut fermentation. Avoid once-daily feeding of large hay volumes, as alpacas may gorge initially and then go long stretches without eating, which can disrupt digestive function.

Grain or pellet supplements, when warranted, should be offered at the same time each day to establish routine. Alpacas are creatures of habit and become stressed by unpredictable schedules. A consistent routine also makes it easier to observe individual animals during feeding — an alpaca that suddenly refuses grain or shows less interest in hay may be signaling the onset of illness or dental problems.

Fresh, clean water must be available at all times. Alpacas drink more than many owners expect, particularly in hot weather and during lactation. In winter, water sources need to be kept from freezing, as alpacas will reduce their intake rather than drink ice-cold water, leading to dehydration and impaction. Heated water buckets or insulated trough systems are a worthwhile investment in cold climates.

Seasonal transitions require gradual dietary adjustments. Moving from hay to pasture in spring should happen over seven to ten days of increasing pasture time to prevent bloat and digestive upset.
