For short-distance transport or small numbers of animals, some owners use modified cargo vans, SUVs, or minivans with the rear seats removed and the cargo area lined with tarps and bedding. However, ceiling height must allow them to stand comfortably and adjust position during the journey, so low-roofed vehicles are not suitable.

Travel preparation includes withholding grain for several hours before departure to reduce the risk of motion-related digestive upset, ensuring animals are hydrated, and trimming toenails if they are long to prevent injury from scrambling on trailer flooring. Bring halters and leads for loading and unloading, along with water, hay, and a basic first aid kit for longer trips. During transport, drive smoothly and avoid sudden acceleration, braking, or sharp turns. Check on animals every two to three hours during long hauls, offering water and monitoring for signs of heat stress or distress. In hot weather, travel during the cooler parts of the day — early morning or evening — and ensure the trailer has adequate airflow. Safety & Identification

Identification methods for alpacas serve both regulatory compliance and practical farm management. Microchipping is the most reliable permanent identification method, with the chip typically implanted subcutaneously in the left side of the neck. Microchip readers should be kept on-site for routine scanning, and chip numbers should be recorded in your farm management records alongside each animal's registration information. Most alpaca registries require or strongly recommend microchipping.

Ear tags provide visible identification at a distance, which is useful for daily management in larger herds. Tags designed for sheep or goats work for alpacas, and both button-style and flag-style tags are used. Apply tags carefully to avoid the cartilage ridges and blood vessels in the ear, and monitor tagged animals for signs of infection or irritation at the tag site. Some owners prefer neck collars or leg bands for visible identification, though these require regular checking to ensure they have not become too tight as the animal grows or as fleece develops around the collar.

Winter gear focuses on maintaining dry shelter conditions and preventing water system freezing. Heated water bucket bases or floating tank deicers keep water accessible in subfreezing temperatures. Additional bedding depth — six to eight inches of straw or shavings — provides insulation from cold ground. Alpacas in full fleece rarely need blankets or coats, but recently shorn animals, elderly alpacas with poor body condition, or sick animals may benefit from lightweight livestock blankets during unexpected cold snaps.

Spring brings mud season in many regions, and managing wet conditions protects both hoof health and pasture integrity. Gravel pads around high-traffic areas such as gates, water stations, and shelter entrances prevent deep mud from forming. Sacrifice paddocks — small, graveled or hardened areas where animals are confined during the wettest periods — protect main pastures from compaction and root damage. Hoof trimming frequency may need to increase during wet seasons, as soft hooves grow faster and are more prone to developing misshapen walls or harboring foot rot organisms.
