Their naturally low body fat percentage and deep chest mean they require a diet that delivers concentrated energy without excessive bulk. Unlike heavier breeds, Salukis burn through calories quickly during bursts of high-speed activity, but they also have periods of low energy expenditure when resting. This means their diet needs to be calorically dense enough to sustain their activity level without overloading their digestive system.
Protein is the cornerstone of a Saluki's diet and should come from high-quality animal sources. Look for foods where a named meat protein appears as the first ingredient. Salukis generally thrive on protein levels between 25 and 30 percent, with fat content in the range of 15 to 20 percent to support their energy needs and maintain their sleek coat. The fat content is particularly important because Salukis lack the insulating body fat of many other breeds, so dietary fat serves double duty as both an energy source and a contributor to body condition.
Carbohydrates should be present in moderate amounts and sourced from easily digestible ingredients. Salukis can be prone to digestive sensitivity, so foods with simple, limited ingredient profiles often work best. Whole grains like brown rice and oatmeal or grain-free alternatives like sweet potato and chickpeas are generally well tolerated. Avoid foods with heavy filler content such as corn gluten meal or excessive soy, as these can contribute to digestive upset without providing meaningful nutritional value.
Micronutrients deserve attention as well. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids support coat health and joint function, both of which matter for an active sighthound. Glucosamine and chondroitin can benefit joint maintenance, especially as Salukis age. Antioxidants from fruits and vegetables support immune health, while adequate calcium and phosphorus ratios are essential for maintaining the breed's fine but strong bone structure.
