Black-Headed Caiques are among the most physically active parrots kept as companions, and their housing must accommodate a level of movement that far exceeds what their compact nine-to-ten-inch frame might suggest. These birds do not sit quietly on a perch for extended periods. They hop, climb, hang upside down, surf along cage bars, and bounce between perches with an energy that more closely resembles a small primate than a typical parrot. A cage that would be perfectly adequate for a similarly sized but less active species will feel cramped and restrictive to a caique, leading to frustration, feather-destructive behavior, and vocalization problems.
The cage is not merely a containment structure but the bird's primary living environment, and for most pet caiques it is where they spend the majority of their time when unsupervised. This means the enclosure must serve multiple functions simultaneously: sleeping quarters, feeding station, exercise space, and enrichment zone. Thinking of the cage as the bird's apartment rather than a holding pen shifts the design priorities toward livability and engagement rather than simple confinement.
Placement within the home matters as much as the cage itself. Caiques are highly social birds that become stressed and withdrawn when isolated from household activity. The cage should be positioned in a room where the family spends significant time, such as a living room or den, but away from the kitchen, where cooking fumes, overheated cookware, and airborne grease pose health risks. A spot against a wall or in a corner provides a sense of security, as caiques feel exposed and anxious when the cage is positioned in the center of a room with open sightlines on all sides.
Drafts, direct sunlight, and temperature extremes should all be avoided. Caiques originate from tropical South American forests and are comfortable in temperatures between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, but they are sensitive to rapid temperature fluctuations. Positioning the cage near exterior doors, single-pane windows, or heating and cooling vents creates exactly the kind of variable conditions that can compromise the bird's respiratory health over time.
