Beyond direct cough suppressants, several other medication classes may be used to manage coughing in dogs by addressing underlying causes or contributing factors. Bronchodilators such as theophylline and terbutaline help open the airways and may reduce coughing related to bronchoconstriction. Corticosteroids reduce inflammation in the respiratory tract and may decrease coughing in conditions such as chronic bronchitis and allergic airway disease. Antibiotics are prescribed when bacterial infection contributes to coughing, though they do not directly suppress the cough reflex. These medications may be used alone or in combination with hydrocodone depending on the underlying condition and the patient's needs.

Complementary and supportive therapies may enhance the effectiveness of hydrocodone or allow lower doses to be used. Weight management is particularly important for dogs with collapsing trachea or chronic bronchitis, as excess weight increases the workload on the respiratory system. Humidification of the environment may help soothe irritated airways, and avoiding triggers such as smoke, dust, and strong odors can reduce coughing frequency. Some dogs benefit from harness use instead of collar and leash to reduce pressure on the trachea. Pet owners should always consult their veterinarian before adding any new treatments or supplements to their dog's regimen, as even seemingly benign interventions can interact with medications or affect the dog's condition.
