Nystatin topical formulations are available as creams and powders, each with characteristics suited to different clinical applications. The powder formulation may be preferred in situations where a drying effect is desirable, such as in moist skin folds or areas where cream application might promote maceration. The minimal systemic absorption from topical application eliminates concerns about organ toxicity that may accompany systemic antifungal medications. Even if birds ingest some topical nystatin through preening, the drug is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, further contributing to its favorable safety characteristics.
