The mother provides no parental care after delivery, so the keeper must be prepared to assume responsibility right away.

During the first day, avoid handling the neonates unless absolutely necessary. They are highly stressed from birth and excessive contact can compound that stress, leading to refusal to feed later on. Place each neonate into an individual enclosure or a partitioned container with a shallow water dish and a secure hide. The enclosure should be escape-proof, as baby water snakes are surprisingly adept at finding even the smallest gaps.

Observe each neonate carefully during this initial period. Look for any that appear lethargic, kinked, or unable to move normally. Healthy neonates should be responsive and actively tongue-flicking. Any that remain motionless for extended periods or show visible deformities should be separated and monitored more closely. An under-tank heating pad regulated by a thermostat is an effective way to provide belly heat without overheating the enclosure. Humidity is equally important for water snakes at any age, but especially for neonates. Aim for a relative humidity of 50 to 70 percent. A shallow water dish that the neonate can enter and exit freely will contribute to ambient humidity. Supplement with light misting if the enclosure dries out too quickly, particularly during shedding periods when higher humidity supports a clean, one-piece shed.

Substrate choices for neonates should prioritize safety and ease of cleaning. Paper towels or unprinted newspaper are ideal during the first few months because they allow the keeper to monitor droppings and spot any signs of illness quickly. Avoid particulate substrates like sand or loose bark at this stage, as neonates can accidentally ingest particles during feeding, leading to impaction.

Handling & Early Socialization

Water snakes are not naturally docile, and neonates are particularly defensive. Biting, musking, and vigorous squirming are all standard reactions when a baby water snake is picked up. This is entirely normal and does not indicate a problem with the individual animal. Understanding this behavior upfront helps keepers avoid overreacting or returning the snake to its enclosure prematurely during handling sessions.

Wait at least two weeks after the first successful feeding before beginning any handling. Handling before the snake has established a feeding routine can interrupt its adjustment to captivity and lead to feeding refusal. Start with very brief sessions of two to three minutes, no more than two or three times per week. Gradually increase duration as the neonate becomes more accustomed to human contact.

Always approach the neonate calmly and avoid sudden movements. Support the body fully and allow the snake to move through your hands rather than restraining it. If the snake musks or bites, remain calm and continue the session briefly before returning it to the enclosure. Ending the session immediately after a defensive display teaches the snake that biting results in being left alone, which reinforces the behavior.

Some keepers prefer to minimize handling of water snakes entirely, particularly if the animal is kept primarily as a display species. This is a valid approach and does not harm the snake. However, some degree of handling familiarity is useful for routine health checks, enclosure maintenance, and veterinary visits. The goal is not to create a cuddly pet but to establish enough tolerance that necessary interactions are less stressful for both the keeper and the snake.

Health Screening & Vet Visits

A veterinary check within the first month of life is strongly recommended for captive-born neonates and is essential for any wild-caught individuals. A reptile-experienced veterinarian can perform a fecal examination to check for internal parasites, which are common in water snakes. External parasites such as mites can also be identified and treated early before they become a larger problem in the collection.

At home, perform visual health checks regularly. Healthy neonates should have clear, bright eyes except during the pre-shed phase when the eyes cloud over temporarily. The body should feel firm and muscular, not limp or excessively bony. Check the mouth for any signs of discharge, swelling, or discoloration, which could indicate mouth rot, a bacterial infection that requires veterinary treatment.

Respiratory infections are among the most common health concerns in neonate water snakes, often caused by enclosure temperatures that are too low or humidity that is either too high without ventilation or too low overall. Symptoms include audible wheezing, open-mouth breathing, mucus around the nostrils, and lethargy. If any of these signs appear, raise the ambient temperature slightly, ensure the enclosure has adequate ventilation, and consult a veterinarian promptly.

Keep detailed records from the beginning. Note the date of birth, first shed, first feeding, and any refusals. Track weight weekly. Record any health observations, treatments, or veterinary visits. These records become invaluable over the life of the animal and are especially helpful if the snake ever needs to be seen by a new veterinarian who has no prior history with the animal.

When to Worry

Refusal to feed after the first shed is one of the most common concerns with neonate water snakes. While a single refusal is not cause for alarm, multiple consecutive refusals over two to three weeks should prompt a review of husbandry conditions. Verify that temperatures, humidity, and enclosure security are all within appropriate ranges. Try varying the prey type or presentation method before assuming a medical issue.

Regurgitation is a serious red flag at any age but is particularly dangerous in neonates due to their small body reserves. If a neonate regurgitates, do not attempt to feed again for at least ten days. Check that the enclosure temperature is adequate for digestion and that the prey item was not too large. Repeated regurgitation requires veterinary attention, as it can quickly become life-threatening through dehydration and energy depletion.

Rapid weight loss, visible ribs, or a noticeably sunken appearance along the spine are signs of failure to thrive. These symptoms can result from parasitic infection, chronic stress, inadequate temperatures, or underlying congenital issues. A fecal test and thorough veterinary examination are warranted if the neonate's condition does not improve with husbandry adjustments.

Watch for neurological symptoms such as star-gazing, corkscrewing, or an inability to right itself when turned over. These can indicate inclusion body disease or other serious conditions. Isolate the affected neonate immediately from any other snakes in the collection and seek veterinary guidance.
