Adult water snakes should maintain a relatively stable weight year-round, with natural slight variations tied to feeding cycles and, in females, reproductive cycles. A sudden loss of more than ten percent of body weight over a short period warrants veterinary investigation.

Annual or semi-annual veterinary visits remain important even for apparently healthy adults. A reptile-experienced veterinarian can perform fecal screens for parasites, assess body condition, and check for early signs of issues that may not yet be visible to the keeper. Prevention is always more effective and less expensive than treatment, and the veterinary relationship built over years of routine visits becomes invaluable when an urgent issue does arise.

Daily observation is the keeper's most powerful diagnostic tool. Take a few moments each day to watch your snake's behavior, note its activity level, and check the enclosure conditions. The water feature is the centerpiece of an adult water snake enclosure. Ideally, it should occupy roughly one-third of the floor space and be deep enough for the snake to fully submerge while still allowing easy exit. Some keepers install built-in water sections with drains for easy maintenance, while others use removable tubs that can be lifted out for cleaning. Environmental enrichment goes beyond the basics of hides and water. The preventive health routine established during the juvenile phase should continue unchanged through adulthood. Semi-annual fecal parasite screenings are recommended, particularly for snakes fed live or fresh fish, which can serve as intermediate hosts for various parasites. Deworming protocols should only be undertaken under veterinary guidance, as incorrect dosing can be harmful.

Skin health is a particular concern for semi-aquatic species. Adult water snakes are susceptible to blister disease, a bacterial skin infection commonly associated with prolonged contact with soiled substrate or contaminated water. The condition presents as fluid-filled blisters on the ventral scales and can progress rapidly if not addressed. Prevention centers on maintaining clean, dry substrate options alongside the water feature and ensuring the snake can fully dry out when it chooses to leave the water.

Respiratory infections remain a risk throughout the water snake's life. The combination of high humidity requirements and the potential for stagnant air creates conditions that can foster bacterial growth if ventilation is inadequate. Ensure the enclosure has sufficient airflow, avoid sealing it too tightly, and monitor for any signs of labored breathing, nasal discharge, or excessive mucus. Early intervention with adjusted temperatures and veterinary care is critical.

Dental health is often overlooked in snakes, but mouth rot, formally known as infectious stomatitis, can affect water snakes at any age. Inspect the mouth periodically for redness, swelling, cheesy discharge, or misaligned teeth. Mouth rot often develops secondary to an injury sustained during feeding or from rubbing against rough enclosure surfaces. Smooth out any abrasive edges in the habitat and use feeding tongs to minimize the risk of oral injury.

Behavioral Maturity

By adulthood, a water snake's personality and behavioral patterns are well established. Some adults become reasonably tolerant of handling, while others remain perpetually defensive. Both outcomes are normal and neither reflects poor husbandry. The keeper's role at this stage is to work with the individual animal's temperament rather than against it, adjusting handling frequency and technique based on what the snake demonstrates it can comfortably tolerate.

Adult water snakes often develop predictable daily routines, becoming active at certain times and retreating to preferred hides at others. These patterns are influenced by lighting, feeding schedule, ambient temperature, and the overall household environment. Consistency in the keeper's routine reinforces consistency in the snake's behavior, which reduces stress for both parties.

Seasonal behavioral shifts are common and should be expected. Many water snake species exhibit reduced appetite and activity during the shorter days of autumn and winter, even in captivity where temperatures remain stable. This is a natural response driven by photoperiod rather than temperature alone. Some keepers accommodate this with a formal brumation period, while others simply accept the reduced activity and resume normal feeding when the snake shows renewed interest in the spring.

Aggression during feeding time often intensifies in adulthood as the snake associates enclosure opening with food delivery. This food-conditioned response is easily managed by using a consistent pre-feeding cue, such as tapping the enclosure lid, and always using feeding tongs rather than hands. For routine maintenance or handling, approach the enclosure at a different time of day than feeding time so the snake learns to distinguish between the two types of interaction.

Shedding & Skin Care

Adult water snakes typically shed every four to eight weeks, with the frequency influenced by growth rate, feeding volume, and overall health. Shedding slows considerably compared to the juvenile phase because growth has largely plateaued. Each shed should come off in a single, complete piece. Consistently fragmented sheds in an adult snake point to a humidity problem, dehydration, or an underlying health issue that warrants investigation.

The pre-shed period is marked by dulling of the skin color, clouding of the eye caps, and often a reduction in appetite and activity. During this time, increase humidity in the enclosure slightly by misting or adding a damp moss hide. Ensure the water feature is full and accessible, as many water snakes will soak extensively before shedding. Avoid handling during pre-shed, as the snake's vision is compromised and it is more likely to be defensive.

After each shed, inspect the shed skin if possible. A complete shed with intact eye caps and tail tip confirms that the process went smoothly. If retained shed is present on the snake, a lukewarm soak of fifteen to twenty minutes usually loosens it enough for gentle removal with a damp cloth. Persistent retained shed, particularly retained eye caps, should be addressed by a veterinarian to avoid damage to the underlying scales or cornea.

Between sheds, monitor the skin for any signs of injury, discoloration, or abnormal texture. Scale rot, abrasions from rough surfaces, and fungal infections can all develop between shed cycles and are easier to treat when caught early. A clean enclosure with appropriate substrate, adequate humidity, and clean water is the best defense against skin issues throughout the adult years.
