By the end of the first year, attentive keepers may notice that some individuals in a cohort are consistently heavier and longer than their siblings — these are often females, though reliable sex determination at this stage requires probing or popping techniques performed by an experienced handler or veterinarian.
Musculoskeletal development during the juvenile period is marked by a transition from the somewhat fragile, wiry build of the neonate to a sturdier, more robust body type. The vertebral and lateral stripes become more sharply defined, and the interstitial skin between scales develops the richer ground coloration characteristic of adult specimens. Juveniles that are being maintained on a nutritionally complete diet will display smooth, rounded body contours without visible spine ridges or concave flanks, which are indicators of underfeeding or parasitic burden.
Shedding frequency during the juvenile phase is notably higher than in adults, occurring approximately every three to five weeks under optimal conditions. Each successful shed results in a brief but measurable growth spurt, and the regularity of shedding serves as a practical proxy for overall metabolic health. Irregular shedding intervals, retained spectacle caps, or sheds that come off in multiple fragments rather than a single intact piece all signal potential problems with humidity, hydration, nutrition, or underlying illness that should be investigated promptly.
