The smooth, cylindrical body plan of Pipe Snakes makes visual sexing unreliable even for experienced keepers, and attempting to pop hemipenes in this species risks injury due to the unusually tight cloacal musculature.
Before initiating a breeding project, keepers should ensure that both prospective parents are in excellent health and optimal body condition. A pre-breeding veterinary examination is strongly recommended, including a fecal parasite screen and, for the female, palpation or ultrasound to assess ovarian follicular status. Both animals should be feeding consistently, shedding cleanly, and showing no signs of respiratory infection, skin disease, or other active health conditions. Introducing a compromised animal to the physiological demands of breeding and, in the female's case, the prolonged energy drain of gestation, invites serious complications that could result in the loss of one or both breeding animals.
The decision to breed Pipe Snakes should also consider the practical realities of caring for and rehoming neonates. A single successful breeding can produce up to fifteen offspring, each requiring individual housing, feeding, and monitoring for a minimum of several months before they are large enough to be responsibly rehomed. The market for captive-bred Pipe Snakes is modest compared to more popular species, and keepers should have a realistic plan for the placement of offspring before initiating breeding. Producing animals for which there is no demand and no prepared homes is an ethical and practical burden that responsible breeders actively avoid.
