Adult Pipe Snakes (Cylindrophis ruffus) reach their full size between three and four years of age, with most individuals measuring twenty-four to thirty-six inches in total length. Females tend to be slightly larger and heavier than males of the same age, a subtle sexual dimorphism that becomes most apparent once the animals are fully mature. Body weight for a healthy adult typically ranges from 150 to 300 grams depending on length, sex, and individual variation. Maintaining the snake within its healthy weight range is one of the most consequential aspects of long-term husbandry and directly influences longevity, reproductive fitness, and resistance to disease.
Assessing body condition in a cylindrical, fossorial snake requires a different approach than with more commonly kept species. A healthy adult Pipe Snake has a uniformly round cross-section along the entire body length, with no visible spine ridge, protruding ribs, or concave flanks. When viewed from above, the body should appear as a smooth, consistent cylinder from behind the head to just anterior to the cloaca, where a gentle taper toward the tail tip is normal. Palpation of the mid-body during routine handling should reveal firm, evenly distributed musculature with no pockets of soft tissue that might indicate localized fat deposits or fluid retention.
Obesity is a common problem in adult Pipe Snakes maintained by well-intentioned keepers who feed too frequently or offer oversized prey items. Because the species is so sedentary and has such a slow metabolism, caloric requirements are modest compared to active, surface-dwelling species of similar size. An obese Pipe Snake develops visible fat deposits along the posterior third of the body, producing a subtly pear-shaped profile rather than the species' characteristic uniform cylinder. Over time, chronic obesity leads to hepatic lipidosis, reduced reproductive success, and a shortened lifespan. Correcting obesity requires a gradual reduction in feeding frequency, not a sudden cessation of feeding that could itself trigger metabolic stress.
Conversely, an underweight adult Pipe Snake displays a triangular or concave cross-section with a visible vertebral ridge and prominent rib outlines. Emaciation can result from chronic underfeeding, internal parasites, dental disease, chronic low-grade respiratory infection, or stress from inappropriate environmental conditions. Before increasing feeding frequency or prey size, an underweight adult should be evaluated by a reptile veterinarian to identify and address any underlying medical cause. Simply feeding more without diagnosing the root cause often fails to produce weight gain and may worsen conditions such as parasite burdens, where increased nutrition benefits the parasite as much as the host.
