Olive Pythons (Liasis olivaceus) are oviparous reptiles native to the rocky gorges, monsoon forests, and semi-arid scrublands of northern Australia. A typical clutch from a healthy adult female contains between twelve and twenty-five eggs, though clutch size can vary depending on the female's body condition, age, and nutritional history. Hatchlings emerge by slicing through the leathery eggshell with a small, keratinous egg tooth located on the rostral tip of the upper jaw. This pipping process may begin with a single slit and continue intermittently over six to eighteen hours before the hatchling fully exits the egg. During this time, keepers must exercise restraint and avoid the temptation to manually assist the hatchling, as interference can tear delicate blood vessels still connected to the inner membrane or cause the neonate to emerge before complete yolk absorption.
Newly emerged Olive Python hatchlings are strikingly different in appearance from their adult counterparts. They typically measure fourteen to eighteen inches in total length and display a more contrasted pattern of olive-brown to reddish-brown dorsal coloration with lighter lateral markings than the relatively uniform, darker tones seen in mature specimens. Their body is slender relative to an adult but well-muscled, and even at this early stage they exhibit the characteristically smooth, glossy scales for which the species is known. Hatchlings are generally less defensive than many other large python species, though individual temperament varies and some neonates will strike or hiss when first disturbed.
The hatching container or incubation tub should not be disturbed until the majority of viable eggs have pipped and hatchlings have fully extricated themselves. In most clutches, the interval between the first and last hatchling to emerge spans twenty-four to forty-eight hours. Once all hatchlings are free and moving independently within the container, they can be carefully transferred to individual neonatal enclosures. Any eggs that remain unpipped after seventy-two hours from the first emergence should be carefully candled or opened by an experienced keeper to determine viability, though intervention at this point rarely yields a surviving hatchling.
Immediate post-hatch husbandry priorities center on warmth, humidity, and cleanliness. The ambient temperature in the hatching area should be held at 86 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit, with humidity between 75 and 85 percent to prevent desiccation of the freshly emerged neonates. Eggshell fragments, non-viable eggs, and residual fluids should be removed as soon as all hatchlings have cleared the incubation container, because organic debris provides a substrate for bacterial and fungal colonization that can quickly overwhelm a neonate's immature immune system.
