The Olive Python (Liasis olivaceus) reaches physical maturity between three and five years of age, depending on sex, genetics, and the cumulative effects of its feeding and husbandry history. Adult males typically measure eight to ten feet in total length and weigh between fifteen and thirty pounds, while adult females are generally larger, averaging nine to thirteen feet and twenty to forty pounds. Exceptional females from robust genetic lines have been documented exceeding thirteen feet, making the Olive Python the second-largest snake species native to Australia, surpassed only by the scrub python. Growth does not cease abruptly upon reaching maturity but instead slows dramatically, with adults adding modest increments of length over many subsequent years.
Body condition in adult Olive Pythons should be assessed regularly using a combination of visual appraisal and tactile evaluation. A healthy adult displays a gently rounded body cross-section from mid-body to the cloaca, with the vertebral ridge barely perceptible under the dorsal musculature. The head should be cleanly defined and proportionate to the body, without noticeable fat deposits along the lower jaw or temporal region. The tail should taper smoothly from the cloacal opening to the tip without abrupt narrowing or visible fat pads at the base. Animals that deviate from these parameters in either direction — excessively thin with a prominent spine and sunken flanks, or overtly obese with a distended midsection and obscured vertebral ridge — require dietary adjustment and potentially veterinary evaluation.
The adult coloration of the Olive Python is among the most understated yet elegant of the large python species. The dorsal surface ranges from dark olive-brown to a warm, reddish-brown depending on regional locality and individual genetics, with a pronounced iridescent sheen visible under natural or full-spectrum lighting. The ventral surface is typically cream to pale yellow, and the labial scales may show fine darker mottling. This coloration serves the animal well in its native habitat, providing effective camouflage against the red sandstone, dark basalt, and laterite substrates of the gorges, caves, and watercourse margins it inhabits across northern Australia.
Musculoskeletal integrity is a hallmark of a well-maintained adult Olive Python. These are powerful, heavily muscled snakes that use their strength for both constriction and locomotion across rugged terrain. An adult in prime condition exhibits smooth, coordinated movement, strong constriction reflexes during feeding, and the ability to support a significant portion of its body weight when climbing or bridging gaps between elevated surfaces. Any persistent weakness, tremoring, or loss of coordination warrants immediate veterinary attention, as these signs can indicate nutritional deficiencies, neurological disease, or systemic infection.
