Night Snakes (Hypsiglena torquata) are oviparous, depositing small clutches of two to nine eggs in sheltered locations beneath rocks, within rodent burrows, or under decomposing vegetation. Incubation under captive conditions typically lasts between forty-five and sixty-five days at temperatures ranging from 78 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Hatchlings emerge by slitting the leathery eggshell with a small, keratinized egg tooth on the rostral scale, a process that may begin with a single visible slit and progress over several hours before the tiny snake fully exits. Keepers should never attempt to assist a pipping hatchling, as premature extraction can tear delicate skin, damage the umbilical connection, or force emergence before complete yolk absorption.
Newly emerged Night Snake hatchlings are remarkably small, measuring only five to seven inches in total length and weighing just two to four grams. Their coloration mirrors the adult pattern in miniature — a pale gray or beige ground color overlaid with dark brown or charcoal blotches along the dorsum and a pair of prominent dark patches on the neck that are characteristic of the species. Despite their diminutive size, hatchlings are immediately mobile and will attempt to seek cover within minutes of full emergence. This instinctive flight response reflects the intense predation pressure faced by small colubrids in their native arid and semi-arid habitats.
The incubation container should remain undisturbed until all viable eggs in the clutch have hatched, which may span twelve to thirty-six hours from the first pip. Once all hatchlings have fully emerged and are moving independently, they can be gently transferred to individual holding containers using a soft paintbrush or by allowing them to crawl onto a flat card for transport. Any eggs that remain unpipped forty-eight hours after the first emergence are unlikely to produce viable offspring and can be carefully opened for inspection or discarded.
Cleanliness during this transition period is essential. Remove eggshell fragments, residual egg fluid, and any non-viable material promptly, as these organic remnants provide a substrate for bacterial and fungal proliferation in the warm, humid hatching environment. The ambient temperature in the hatching area should be maintained at approximately 80 degrees Fahrenheit with relative humidity between 70 and 80 percent. These conditions ease the hatchlings' physiological transition from the enclosed egg environment to independent thermoregulation and respiration.
