Cycling & Conditioning

The cooling period triggers hormonal changes in both males and females that are necessary for reproductive behavior and gamete development.

During the cooling phase, gradually reduce nighttime temperatures to 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit while maintaining daytime temperatures at 78 to 80 degrees. This creates a more pronounced temperature differential between day and night than the snake normally experiences. Simultaneously, reduce the photoperiod to approximately 10 hours of light and 14 hours of darkness to simulate shorter winter days. These environmental changes should be introduced gradually over a period of two to three weeks rather than abruptly.

Reduce feeding frequency during the cooling period. Most breeders offer one small meal every three to four weeks during this time, though some individuals will refuse food entirely, which is normal and expected. Do not attempt to force-feed a snake that refuses during the breeding cycle. Maintain hydration by continuing regular misting and providing fresh water, as the snake's water requirements do not decrease during the cooling period.

Increase misting frequency and introduce brief rainfall simulations during the cooling phase to mimic the wet season conditions that trigger breeding behavior in wild populations. Introduction & Mating

Monitor the introduction closely from a distance, watching for signs of aggression versus courtship. A receptive male will approach the female and begin rubbing his chin and spurs along her body. Do not force pairings. Separate the animals and try again in a week, or consider pairing with a different male if repeated introductions are unsuccessful.

Egg Development & Laying

After successful mating, the female will enter a period of follicular development and egg formation that typically lasts several weeks. During this time, she will develop a noticeable mid-body swelling as the eggs grow and take shape within the oviducts. The female may seek out the warm end of the enclosure more frequently and may wrap tightly around the perch in the warmest zone for extended periods.

A pre-lay shed occurs approximately two to four weeks before egg deposition. This shed is a reliable indicator that laying is imminent and should prompt the keeper to prepare a suitable nesting site. Provide a lay box consisting of a partially enclosed container filled with dampened sphagnum moss or vermiculite placed on the enclosure floor. The lay box should be large enough for the female to coil comfortably inside and should maintain high humidity.

Green tree pythons typically lay between 6 and 25 eggs per clutch, with 10 to 15 being average. The female will deposit the eggs in the lay box and immediately coil around them, exhibiting the maternal incubation behavior that is characteristic of many python species. In the wild, female green tree pythons thermoregulate the eggs by shivering thermogenesis, rhythmically contracting their muscles to generate heat and maintain the egg mass at an appropriate temperature.

Many breeders choose to remove the eggs from the female and incubate them artificially, which provides more precise temperature and humidity control. If artificial incubation is planned, carefully uncoil the female from the eggs as gently as possible. Green tree python eggs are often adhered to each other and should generally be incubated in the cluster as laid rather than separated, as pulling apart adhered eggs risks tearing the shells and killing the developing embryos.

Incubation & Hatching

Artificial incubation of green tree python eggs requires a reliable, thermostat-controlled incubator set to 86 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the egg mass in a ventilated container on a bed of dampened vermiculite, perlite, or a purpose-made reptile egg incubation medium. The substrate should be moist enough to hold its shape when squeezed but should not drip water. Maintain relative humidity inside the incubation container at approximately 90 to 100 percent.

Incubation typically lasts 45 to 55 days at the recommended temperature range. During this period, candle the eggs periodically using a small, bright light source held against the shell in a darkened room. Fertile eggs will show visible vascular development within the first two weeks, appearing as a network of red blood vessels spreading through the egg. Infertile or dead eggs will turn yellow, collapse, or develop mold and should be removed to prevent contamination of the remaining viable eggs.

As hatching approaches, the eggs will begin to dimple and deflate slightly, which is a normal sign of the developing embryos absorbing the remaining egg contents. Within a day or two of this dimpling, hatchlings will slit the eggshell using their egg tooth and begin to emerge. The process is not simultaneous across the clutch, and it may take 24 to 48 hours for all neonates to fully emerge from their eggs.

Do not rush the hatching process. Hatchlings that have slit the egg but not yet fully emerged are still absorbing their yolk sacs and should be allowed to exit at their own pace. Prematurely pulling a hatchling from the egg can rupture the yolk sac and cause life-threatening hemorrhage. Once all neonates have emerged, transfer them individually to prepared neonate enclosures and begin the newborn care protocols appropriate for this species.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Breeding green tree pythons carries significant responsibilities that extend well beyond the mechanics of reproduction and incubation. Before undertaking any breeding project, carefully consider whether you have the resources, space, knowledge, and market to responsibly produce and place the resulting offspring. A single clutch can produce 15 or more neonates that will each require individual housing, feeding, and care for months before they are ready for placement.

The green tree python market can be volatile, and the ability to sell or place offspring is not guaranteed. Breeding common localities or morphs without established buyer interest can result in surplus animals that are difficult to place responsibly. Research current market conditions, connect with the green tree python community, and have placement plans in place before breeding occurs. Responsible breeders do not produce animals they cannot care for indefinitely if sales do not materialize.

Female green tree pythons should not be bred in consecutive years without adequate recovery time. Egg production places enormous physiological demands on the female, depleting calcium reserves, body fat, and overall condition. Allow a minimum of one full year between breeding cycles, and only breed the female again when she has fully recovered her pre-breeding weight and body condition. Some breeders recommend resting females for two years between clutches to ensure complete recovery.

Maintain detailed breeding records including parentage, locality information, breeding dates, clutch size, hatch rates, and the disposition of all offspring.
