Gopher snakes should not be bred until they have reached full physical maturity and are in excellent health. Males are generally ready to breed at two to three years of age, while females should be at least three years old and weigh a minimum of 500 grams before being considered as breeding candidates. Breeding an undersized or underweight female puts her at significant risk for egg binding, nutritional depletion, and other complications that can be life-threatening.

Before entering a breeding program, both the male and female should receive a thorough veterinary examination. Fecal tests for parasites, assessment of body condition, and evaluation of overall health are essential. Parasitic infections, respiratory issues, or any other active health problems must be fully resolved before breeding is attempted. A snake that is fighting an infection or carrying a heavy parasite load does not have the physiological reserves to handle the additional demands of reproduction.

Genetic considerations should also factor into breeding decisions. Responsible breeders research the lineage of their animals to avoid inbreeding and to understand any heritable health conditions that may be present in the bloodline. Breeding for specific color morphs or pattern variations should never take priority over the health and viability of the offspring. In the wild, gopher snakes brumate during the cooler months, and this period of reduced temperature and metabolic activity stimulates the hormonal changes necessary for successful breeding. In captivity, replicating this cycle is essential for consistent breeding results.

The brumation process begins with a gradual reduction in feeding during late fall. Offer the snake its last meal approximately two weeks before beginning the temperature reduction, and allow the snake to fully digest and defecate before cooling begins. An animal that enters brumation with food in its digestive tract risks dangerous bacterial growth and decomposition of the undigested meal.

Reduce enclosure temperatures gradually over the course of one to two weeks, bringing the overall temperature down to 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Maintain this cooled state for approximately eight to twelve weeks. During brumation, the snake should have access to fresh water at all times but should not be offered food. Check on the snake periodically to ensure it remains hydrated and is not showing signs of illness, but minimize handling and disturbance.

At the end of the brumation period, raise temperatures gradually back to normal over one to two weeks. Resume feeding with a small meal once the snake has fully warmed up and is showing interest in food. Males will typically begin showing breeding behavior, including restlessness and tongue-flicking, within a few weeks of emerging from brumation. Females will undergo a post-brumation shed that signals they are approaching reproductive readiness.

Mating & Copulation

Introduction of the male to the female's enclosure is the standard approach for gopher snake breeding. The female's enclosure is preferred because it carries her scent and is her established territory, which tends to reduce stress. Introduce the male after the female has completed her post-brumation shed, as this shed event releases pheromones that signal receptivity.

Courtship behavior in gopher snakes involves the male actively pursuing the female, aligning his body alongside hers, and rhythmically jerking or undulating his body to stimulate her. The male may also use chin rubbing along the female's back and tail to encourage copulation. Successful mating is confirmed when the male engages one of his hemipenes with the female's cloaca, a process that can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours.

Monitor the pair during introduction and mating. While gopher snakes are generally not aggressive toward each other during breeding, occasional incompatibility can result in biting or defensive behavior. If either snake shows persistent aggression or extreme stress, separate them immediately and try again in a few days. Some pairs require multiple introductions before successful copulation occurs.

Multiple mating sessions over the course of one to two weeks can improve fertilization rates. Allow the female at least 24 hours of rest between introductions. Once the female begins to show signs of disinterest, such as actively avoiding the male or displaying defensive postures, remove the male and allow the female to settle back into her normal routine. Continued harassment by the male after the female has become unreceptive causes unnecessary stress.

Egg Development & Laying

After successful mating, female gopher snakes typically develop eggs over a period of four to six weeks. During this time, the female's appetite may increase significantly as her body directs resources toward egg production. Offer slightly more frequent meals with appropriately sized prey to support this increased nutritional demand. Some females become more reclusive during egg development and may prefer to spend the majority of their time in the warmest hide in the enclosure.

As the eggs develop, they become visible as distinct lumps along the posterior third of the female's body. The female will undergo a pre-lay shed approximately seven to fourteen days before egg deposition. This shed is a reliable indicator that laying is imminent, and a nesting box should be provided at this point if one has not already been placed in the enclosure.

The nesting box should be a enclosed container with a single entry hole, filled with damp sphagnum moss or vermiculite. The interior should maintain high humidity while allowing adequate air circulation. Place the nesting box on the warm side of the enclosure. Most females will investigate the nesting box for several days before committing to it as a laying site. Once laying begins, the process typically takes several hours and should not be disturbed.

A typical gopher snake clutch consists of six to twenty eggs, with clutch size varying based on the female's size, age, and condition. After laying, the female will usually leave the nesting box on her own. She will appear visibly thinner and may be dehydrated. Offer fresh water immediately and allow her to rest for several days before offering a small meal. The female will need attentive care in the weeks following egg laying to rebuild her body condition.

Incubation & Hatching

Gopher snake eggs should be removed from the nesting box and transferred to an incubator as soon as possible after laying. Handle the eggs carefully and avoid rotating them, as the embryo attaches to one side of the egg within hours of being laid and rotation can be fatal. Mark the top of each egg with a soft pencil to maintain orientation during transfer.

Incubation substrate should be damp vermiculite or perlite, mixed at a ratio of approximately one part water to one part substrate by weight. Arrange the eggs in the substrate with the top third of each egg exposed above the surface. Maintain incubation temperatures between 80 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal development. Temperatures at the lower end of this range tend to produce slightly longer incubation periods and may influence the size and vigor of the hatchlings.

The incubation period for gopher snake eggs is typically 65 to 75 days, though this can vary based on temperature and other factors. During incubation, check the eggs periodically for signs of mold, collapse, or discoloration. Healthy eggs will swell slightly over the incubation period and maintain a white, turgid appearance. Eggs that yellow, collapse, or develop foul odors are likely infertile or have died and should be removed to prevent contamination of viable eggs.

When hatching begins, the first sign is a small slit cut into the egg by the hatchling's egg tooth. The hatchling may take 24 to 48 hours to fully emerge after making the initial cut. Do not assist the hatching process unless the hatchling appears to be in distress after more than 48 hours with its head protruding from the egg. Premature assistance can cause bleeding from the yolk sac and is rarely necessary with gopher snake eggs.

Responsible Breeding Ethics

Breeding gopher snakes carries responsibilities that extend well beyond the mechanics of mating and incubation. Every clutch of eggs produced represents a commitment to raising, housing, feeding, and placing a significant number of hatchlings in appropriate homes. Before undertaking a breeding project, keepers should critically assess whether they have the resources, time, and market demand to support the resulting offspring.

The captive reptile market is subject to fluctuations in demand, and gopher snakes, while popular, are not among the highest-demand species. A realistic assessment of the local and online market for gopher snake hatchlings is essential before breeding. Producing large numbers of hatchlings that cannot be placed in responsible homes is a disservice to the animals and to the reptile-keeping community as a whole.

Responsible breeders provide accurate information about each hatchling's lineage, feeding history, health status, and temperament to prospective buyers. They also screen potential homes to ensure that buyers have the knowledge, equipment, and commitment to provide proper long-term care. Standing behind the animals you produce by offering guidance and support to new keepers, and by accepting animals back if the buyer's circumstances change, is the hallmark of an ethical breeder.
