Seasonal behavioral changes are normal and expected in adult gopher snakes. Many individuals become restless and may refuse food during late fall and winter, even without a formal brumation period. This seasonal appetite reduction is driven by hormonal cycles linked to photoperiod and temperature and is not a cause for concern as long as the snake maintains good body condition. Some keepers choose to offer a brief brumation period of six to eight weeks at reduced temperatures, which can reset the snake's appetite and is necessary for breeding.

Aggression in well-socialized adult gopher snakes is rare but can occur during breeding season, particularly in males. Hormonal males may become restless, refuse food, and display increased defensive behavior. This period typically passes within a few weeks. Handling can continue during this time with increased caution, or it can be temporarily reduced if the snake is clearly stressed. Distinguishing between a defensive bluff display and genuine aggression is important: gopher snakes hiss, flatten their heads, and vibrate their tails dramatically but almost never follow through with a bite when handled calmly and confidently.

Shedding & Skin Maintenance

The shedding process follows the same pattern as in younger animals: dulled coloration, clouded eyes, reduced appetite, and increased seclusion followed by the actual shed event. The entire cycle from first signs to completed shed usually takes seven to ten days.

Maintaining proper humidity during the pre-shed period is just as important for adults as it is for juveniles. A humidity increase to 50 to 60 percent during this time, achieved through misting or a damp moss hide, helps ensure a clean, complete shed. An adult gopher snake that consistently sheds in one piece is a reliable indicator of good overall husbandry. Conversely, chronic incomplete sheds suggest that baseline humidity, hydration, or general health needs reassessment.

As gopher snakes age, their coloring often deepens and their pattern contrast increases following each shed. The rich browns, tans, and black markings that define the species become more vivid with maturity. Each clean shed reveals the snake at its most vibrant, making proper shed support not just a health measure but an aesthetic one as well.

Inspect each shed skin for completeness, paying particular attention to the eye caps and tail tip. These are the most common areas for retained shed in gopher snakes. If retained shed occurs despite appropriate humidity management, evaluate whether the snake has adequate rough surfaces in its enclosure for initiating the shed process.
